Ball and Chain in Tycoon Racers Strategy Explained

The Ball and Chain debuff is a new strategical dynamic that features in some racer events on Monopoly Go. Acquire Ball and Chains via some lap milestone rewards of a racer event then deploy them to another team in order to slow down their progress.

In this guide I'll tell you how to get more Ball and Chains, how best to use them, and exactly they do.

What is the Ball and Chain and what does it do

The Ball and Chain was first introduced into racer events in April 2025. It is a debuff that you can use again any opposing team so that they will only receive 50% of the points from the dice popper while they have the ball and chain attached to their team.

Teams that have been given a ball and chain, can get released from it's effect by gaining points from the dice popper until the chains have been broken, they will then get 100% of the points from the dice popper unless they have more chains to break or until another Ball and Chain is given to their team.

How to get more Ball and Chains

In the first event that has featured Ball and Chains, these are won from some lap milestones in the racer event. When you open the lap reward boxes, sometimes one of the options will be a Ball and Chain. When you unlock one, you'll be prompted to allocate it to an opposing team right away.

In future Tycoon Racer events there may be other ways to get more Ball and Chains, such as via banner event or tournament milestones, but at the time of writing the only way to get more is via the lap milestones in the racer event itself.

Best Ball and Chain strategy

There are a few strategical options available to you as there are quite a lot of Ball and Chains that can be distributed considering each member of team will get to unlock one from various lap milestones. Here are a few ideas:

1. Use them on any team that is in the lead - This is a simple and obvious strategy and you can stack multiple Ball and Chains to any team that you like. So if they have one already, you can still add more. Hitting the lead team is an obvious strategy, so it may also pay to not take an early lead in this event and hold abck until right at the end to avoid getting hit by Ball and Chains.
2. Anticipate who will lead next - A lot of teams like to stay within a range of the lead team, these should also be candidates for your Ball and Chains. When allocating one you will be able to see which teams already have Ball and Chains, and which ones have none. If the first placed team already have a number of them but another challenging team has none, then it may be a better option to give your Ball and Chain to that other team.
3. Last placed team - It's quite likely that a last placed team will be holding back in order to hit hard in the closing moments of a race, don't forget to give them a Ball and Chain too. While they may not be competitive initially, I've seen it time and again the last placed team make a mad dash for the finish line in the closing hour of a race, so don't count anyone out in this game.
