Infinite Caps Glitch

This trick will surely be patched by Bethesda. Since the game doesn't have any need to connect online (unless if you're going to download DLCs in the future), you can avoid any "fix" for this glitch by turning down any prompt to update your game, especially if your console is connected to the internet most of the time.

Also, this trick doesn't give you technically infinite caps you can carry with you but rather it will allow you to "purchase" all the vendor's items without spending anything. This is quite useful especially when you need various components to customize your gear and improve your settlements.

Here are some important notes to perform this glitch:

  • Traders will eventually replenish their caps and stock so you can do this trick as much as you like
  • This seems to be working only when buying/selling ammo. And the vendor should have the ammo in his/her inventory by default. Selling her ammo then leaving the trade screen will not trigger the glitch.
  • The glitch will require you to legitimately "sell" the ammo your selling to the trader. That said, if there are multiple ammo types the vendor is carrying, select the cheapest one or the type you don't have much.
  • When doing the glitch, DON'T ACCEPT the sale or close the deal while you're doing the process. This will cancel the glitch and you'll still have to do the same process from the beginning.
  • Always save before attempting to glitch just in case you messed something up.
  • If you're planning to buy back an ammo type you're planning to glitch, make sure to deposit all rounds you have for that ammo that to your companion. That way, if you perform the glitch, you won't have to sell your current stock of ammunition. I personally lost 600+ rounds of 10mm ammo when I forgot to deposit all 1300 rounds I have in my possession before performing this glitch.

Here are the steps:

  1. Find a vendor that sells ammo. Any ammo will do. For this example, let's say the vendor has 20 rounds of 10mm ammo. Buy all 30 (without closing the deal)
  2. Next, sell one to the vendor. That should leave you with 29 10mm rounds. (again, without closing the trade window)
  3. Now, sell all 29 rounds to the vendor (once again, without closing the trade). If done correctly, this should leave you with one glitched ammo in your inventory. Keep selling that glitched ammo piece until you rake in some income.
  4. Once the glitch is active, you can now switch to the trader's window and "buy" the glitched ammo type. Keep doing this until the cap balance between you guys skyrocket.
  5. Now you can buy all the vendor's stuff then just keep selling him the glitched ammo piece until your balances even out and the vendor ends up with a negative balance. Once that's done, you can close the deal.
  6. The sold ammo will stay with the vendor but since you got all his stuff anyway, you can just sell him the weapons and apparel you don't need to buy back that ammo.
