What is the Weight Stat?

This is somewhat a hidden Stat in weapons and equipment since the game doesn’t tell you much about it. However, this seems to have a significant impact during actual combat. In this page, we will be discussing how Weight (Wt) can affect your unit’s performance in battle.

First, you can see a weapon or equipment’s weight Stat by enabling the “details” cursor. Just press X when you’re viewing from the inventory. Simply hover the cursor to the item to display its stat. One thing to note is that the weight for each weapon/equipment type will vary depending on what they’re made of. For example, for swords, the Training Sword’s weight is 2, Iron Sword 5, and Steel Sword 10.

Next, the main combat mechanic affected by weight is your Attack Speed. Having a higher attack speed is essential for enabling the unit to perform a Double Attack. (represented by a “x2” next to the attacker’s might (Mt) calculation in the Combat Forecast screen).

According to HyperXGaming, the formula for this mechanic is Attack Speed (AS) is equal to your unit’s Speed stat (Spd), deducted by the equipment’s weight (Wt). For every 5 points of Str, the weight penalty can be reduced by 1.

AS = Spd - (Wt - Str/5)

To make it easier to understand, let’s have an example below. Please refer to the highlighted values in the screenshot provided. Byleth has a Steel Bow (Wt 11) and Accuracy Ring (Wt 0) equipped so his total equipment weight is simply 11.

With an Str Stat of 25, we divide it by 5; this means we can reduce the Weight penalty of the Steel Bow by 5.

* (Str) 25/ 5 = 5

* (Bow Weight) 11-5 = 6

So with a Speed Stat of 25, we’ll get the computation below.

* AS = 25 - (11-5)

* AS = 19

This calculation seems to affect only the weight of the current weapon and shield or accessory equipped, and not the total weight of the items in a unit’s inventory.

In another example below, we’ll have a straightforward calculation for Ingrid’s AS.

* Training Lance = 3 wt

* Iron Shield = 2 wt

* Str = 15

* Spd = 27

* Total Equip Wt = 5

AS = 27 - (5 - 15/5)

27 - (5-3)

27 - 2

AS = 25

This system gives a somewhat right balance since you’re most likely to be able to attack twice using lighter, weaker weapons than do a solid, single strike using heavier, more powerful weapons. Again, the Speed and Strength Stats of the unit has a strong influence for this as well.
