Before we start with the story routes, we would like to discuss the four story routes in the game. While it’s right to assume that there should be three routes, (one each for the Three Houses) there’s a branching route in Edelgard’s storyline that will allow you to side with the Monastery, hence the fourth route. Here are the titles of each route:
* White Clouds (Part 1, before the timeskip)
* Verdant Wind (Part 2, Claude's Route)
* Azure Moon (Part 2, Dimitri's Route)
* Crimson Flower (Part 2, Edelgard's Route)
* Silver Snow (Part 2, Church Route)
White Clouds is the first part which pretty much covers the pre-timeskip period. This is where you’ll have to learn the basics, build Support/strengthen your students and allies, and Recruit as much students as you can from the other houses. This route is the same, regardless of the House you’ve chosen early in the game.
Based on fan discussions we found, here are the routes’ summaries that will help you decide the order:
Route | Description |
---|---|
Azure Moon (Dimitri's Route) | Pretty straightforward; seems to be complete and considered the traditional FE route. Perfect for single-playthroughs. |
Verdant Wind (Claude's Route) | This route is also straightforward, with much more emphasis with Fodlan’s lore and history. |
Crimson Flower (Edelgard's Route) | This route heavily focuses on Edelgard’s perspective or side of the story which is not tackled in the other routes (hence, making her look like a heartless tyrant). Taking this as your first route may leave you feel rushed or confused with the lore. This route also involves permanently killing some beloved characters that you failed to Recruit. |
Silver Snow (Church Route) | This route highlights the Church and Byleth as the main plot drivers. Since this route has a lot of similarities with the Golden Deer route, many players don’t recommend playing these two routes back-to-back. Some players say that this route is an inferior version of Verdant Wind and consider it to be the worst of the four routes so many choose it as the last route to play. |
This can be done in Chapter 11: Throne of Knowledge. You’ll find Edelgard in the Entrance Hall. Do not talk to her yet since you’ll be forced to make a decision whether you’ll go to Enbarr with her or stay behind. This decision will have a direct effect on the story. Read carefully:
* Choose to go with Edelgard to Enbarr: This is needed if you want to take the Crimson Flower route. You’ll receive an additional chance to change your mind later on.
* Stay behind: If you choose this option, your story route will automatically be Silver Snow (Church route)
If you’re planning to play both routes, it’s important to create a separate save file now, before Talking to Edelgard. You can use this checkpoint so you can play the other route without starting all over again.
If you’re planning on making taking on all routes across multiple playthroughs, then playing them in order will give you the best experience. There’s nothing wrong in choosing a route based on the House leader you really want; however, the storyline, lore, character developments, point of views, and more can be experienced fully if you played the routes in order.
Here’s some of the route orders that will help give you the best or at least satisfying experience. If ever you started with a different route from the list, don’t worry; this is not absolute and just merely a recommendation.
