Mystic Gateways

Unlike the previous installments of the game where the entire levels are linear, you'll be able to backtrack in the previous areas using portals called Mystic Gateways. This is a main concern especially if you discover later on that you missed some Artifacts, valuables, and chests in the previous areas. Thanks for the game’s reboot and redesign, you don’t necessarily need to miss anything.

These gateways may look like an ordinary pile of rocks early on. Continue with the story until you reach the Lake of Nine and encountered the World Serpent. Once the water has receded, you’ll need to investigate Tyr’s Temple first. Upon embarking, Brok will meet you there and invite you to his workshop. Here, he’ll give you a Key to Yggdrasil, allowing you to use these mystic gateways. However, these gateways will only be one-way leading back to Brok’s Shop in Tyr’s Temple and not vice versa. Take note that you can only travel between Mystic Gateways within the same realm. If you wish to use a mystic gateway to another realm, you have to use Tyr's Temple to jump to the next realm first.

Later in the game, near the end of the Journey quest, The Sickness, you'll be able to travel two-ways between certain discovered gateways. Later on as well, you’ll eventually obtain the Unity Stone which will allow you to travel two-ways between ANY discovered Mystic Gateways. For the greater part of the game, you’ll have no choice but to treat Brok’s shop as the central hub for your activities and you have to do manual backtracking to several areas should you wish to do it. Discovered Mystic Gateways will be permanently marked in the map.

Using the Mystic Gateways

To travel using Mystic Gateways, approach one and interact with it. You’ll be taken inside the World Tree’s Realm. As Brok advised, do not jump off the path until you reach a certain point of a story. If you interacted with the edge and jumped off, you’ll have to restart from the checkpoint.

Since this realm acts as a temporary space while the game is loading your next location, you can walk around or wait until a door appears. Interact with the door and you’ll be able to travel conveniently to the connected gateway.
