After concluding the Post Game Story in the Sevii Islands, you can return to Indigo Plateau to rematch the Pokemon League. The Pokemon League will continue to be comprised of the Elite Four and Kanto Region Champion, five trainers you must still defeat consecutively in order to defeat the Pokemon League. This time around, however, the members of the Pokemon League have gotten all the stronger (including your Rival, the former Kanto Region Champion) even switching out at least one of the Pokemon they previously had with one found in either the Johto or Hoenn Region.

As you know from your previous battles with him, your Rival will continue to use a very balanced Pokemon Team. Because of this, you will need multiple Pokemon of various types on your own Pokemon Team in order to defeat him. You will definitely need one Flying Type on your Pokemon Team, which will help you defeat the Heracross he recently replaced his Pidgeot with. You will also need an Electric Type, which will help defeat his Gyarados/Blastoise (depending on his Starter Pokemon). You will also need a Water Type Pokemon, which will help with the Tyranitar he replaced his Rhydon with and his Arcanine/Charizard. A Fire Type will also come in handy, especially against his Exeggutor/Venusaur. A Bug Type would also do wonders against Alakazam (as well as his Exeggutor should he have it).

To recap, if you're looking to have an advantage over your Rival in this rematch of the ages, the best Pokemon Team to have will include at least a Flying Type, an Electric Type, a Water Type, a Fire Type, and a Bug Type. The final spot on your Pokemon Team can go to another strong Pokemon of different type than those already mentioned, perhaps a Fighting Type or Psychic Type, furthering the balance to your Pokemon Team.
