Certain moves may inflict status conditions that may hinder a Pokemon's performance which can tip the advantage during Pokemon Battles. Aside from moves that can only inflict status conditions, there are offensive moves that can deal both damage and status ailments. Certain moves, abilities and items can cure a Pokemon's status condition.

There are two types of Status Conditions. First, the status condition of the Pokemon will be displayed under its name. These conditions will remain even after battle and can only be cured using items or taking the pokemon to a Pokemon center. These status conditions can’t stack up over the other. A pokemon who uses “Rest” will be able to heal these conditions but will be replaced by “Sleep” as the side effect of the move.

Burn(BRN)

Pokemon afflicted with this status will lose a fixed percentage of their HP per turn and will have their Attack stat lowered by half. Fire-type pokemons are immune to this status condition.

Paralyze(PAR)

Pokemon afflicted with this status won’t be able to attack in 1 out of 4 turns due to paralysis. It's Speed will also decrease by 25%. Electric-type Pokemon are immune against this status condition.

Poison(PSN)

Pokemon afflicted with this status will lose a fixed percentage of its HP per turn. A pokemon can be poisoned or badly poisoned. When poisoned, around 1/ 8th of the pokemon’s HP is decreased. However when badly poisoned, a pokemon will lose 1/ 16th of its HP will be gradually stack up per turn until the pokemon faints. Poison and Steel-type pokemon are immune against this nasty status condition.

Freeze(FRZ)

Pokemon afflicted with this status will not be able to perform any attacks as long as it is frozen. Every turn, there’s a small chance that the pokemon can be defrosted. A frozen pokemon is also thawed by using a fire move on it. Obviously, ice-type pokemon are immune against this status ailment.

Sleep(SLP)

Pokemon afflicted with this status will will not be able to attack as long as it is asleep, though there are also certain moves that can only be used while the Pokemon is sleeping. An example would be Snore and Sleep Talk. Moves like Dream Eater and Nightmare can be used on a sleeping pokemon to deal damage.

The other type of status condition are those whose effects would only last for one battle, or until the Pokemon is switched out. These conditions will not be displayed on your screen and can be all used simultaneously as well as with the one of the previous five conditions mentioned.

Confuse

Pokemon afflicted with this status will sometimes damage itself instead of the opponent due to confusion. The damage dealt depends on the pokemon’s attack and defense stats. The effect of being confused runs from one to four turns or until the pokemon is switched out.

Infatuation

Pokemon afflicted with this status will have a 50% chance of not using any moves at a time. A Pokemon can only be infatuated by the another Pokemon of the opposite gender.

The following status conditions are caused by certain moves and can be stacked over the other normal status effects.

Curse

When used by a non-ghost type Pokemon, this move will increase the user’s attack and defense while lowering its speed. A ghost-type pokemon using this move in exchange for 50% of its HP to inflict the Cursed status condition to the target pokemon. The cursed pokemon will then lose 25% of its HP per turn.

Disable

This is a normal move that will prevent the pokemon from using its last used move for the next four turns.

Encore

This is a normal move that will force the target pokemon to use the last move they used

Leech Seed

This grass move will restore the user’s HP by half of the damage taken from the target each turn.

Nightmare

This ghost move can only be used on a sleeping pokemon. The target will lose 25% of its HP each turn while it is sleeping.
