How to run a Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report

Published by SuperCheats Staff on Aug 31st 2013
If your laptop is running on Windows 7, you can run a Power Efficiency report that may display details about your computer’s power management and may help you handle issues related to it. For best results, it’s better to run this report when the machine is idle and without any open documents or running applications (except the background apps and processes)
Note: You need administrator access to use this feature. If your account is limited, you need to know the admin password and use an “elevated command prompt”. This is basically a command prompt with admin access. If you’re the only user and if you have admin access, skip to step 2.

  1. Click Start then type cmd in the search field. Right-click on cmd and select Run as Administrator. Enter the admin password if prompted and this should open a command prompt

  3. In the command prompt, type the command powercfg –energy. Wait for the report to finish in 60 seconds. When finished, an HTML report file named "energy-report.html" will be created in the current path as your command prompt. (default is C:\Windows\system32\)

  4. To open the report to a browser, type energy-report.html in the command prompt.

If you’re having power-related issues and the report seems to be vague to you, you can post the report in the Microsoft TechNet forums for help. For more information, you can this link from Microsoft.
