How to Pin a Drive to the Taskbar

Published by SuperCheats Staff on Aug 31st 2013
You can pin applications in the task bar but if you try to drag-and-drop your drives for instant access, Windows 7 won’t allow you to do it since it will just pin the drive to Windows Explorer.

Is there a workaround? Of course! Follow the steps below.

  1. Open a blank notepad then click File then Save As. For demonstration purposes, let’s name it after the drive we want to pin then use “.exe” as its extension. (Drive D.exe) Next make sure that the “Save As Type” dropdown under “File Name” is set to All Files.

  2. Close the notepad then find the file where you saved it. You’ll know that you successfully changed it to a non-working executable file by how the icon looks and by having more options when you right-click it. Drag this note to the taskbar to pin it there.

  3. Once it is pinned, right-click on the note and you should be able to see its name and the option to unpin it. Right-click again on the name (in this example Drive D) then select Properties.

  4. In the Properties window, change the “Target” field to what drive you want this pinned shortcut to open. For this example it is simply D:\. The “Start in” field should be emptied as well.

  5. You can also change the icon to a drive icon if you want. You can also delete the exe file you created earlier.
