Weapons are an integral part of a game’s combat system. Most of the time, having a properly-upgraded and enhanced weapon can make an encounter incredibly challenging or relatively easy. Valkyrie’s weapons directly affect her damage output on top of her other stat-boosting skills. So far, Valkyrie only needs to manage her weapons without any need of maintaining her armor and accessories so that makes equipment management in the game quite streamlined and simple. In our Weapon Proficiency and Upgrade Guide, we will discuss how to increase your individual weapon Proficiency and how to upgrade them.

Valkyrie Elysium is the latest title of the renowned Valkyrie series. Play as the Valkyrie as she purifies the land from evil in a collapsing world as Ragnarok looms. Summon the souls of chosen warriors called Einherjars to assist you in combat and unleash the power of Divine Arts to smite your foes.

Overview

Valkyrie starts off with her trusty blade, Alfodr but as she completes main story quests and subquests, she’ll obtain new weapons with various move sets. She can equip up to two different weapons at a time, that will be assigned to the UP and RIGHT DPAD buttons. Simply press the assigned buttons to swap between the equipped weapons. (Take note that there are certain movement animations that you have to finish before you can swap weapons. For example, Valkyrie cannot seamlessly swap weapons when she’s in mid-swing). You can freely modify these weapon assignments by going to the Menu > Equip option.

On top of elemental damage, some enemies are also weak against specific weapon types, allowing you to deal even more damage to them. When you lock on an enemy however, there will be no indicator as to what weapon they’re weak against, unlike their elemental weakness that’s displayed beside their health gauge. You can review the enemy type’s details in the main menu > Collection > Enemies screen but if that’s tedious, you can just hit the enemy and the “Weapon Weakness” indicator will appear on contact if the enemy is weak against that weapon. Between elemental and weapon weakness, I suggest prioritizing on applying elemental weakness first as it has a major impact on the flow of battle.

Each weapon’s Physical Attack and Magic Attack Stats are relatively similar when compared on the same enhancement levels. Additionally, you can also equip Runes to the weapons to provide them additional buffs and effects. These runes can be freely removed or interchanged between weapons. You can obtain new runes from treasure chests during main quests or sub quests.

Weapon Enhancement

You can only enhance weapons through Save Points. Enhancement increases their damage and helps unlock new moves exclusive to that weapon. Innate weapon properties like attack speed remain constant as it entirely depends on the weapon. For example, enhancing the spear Baleygr won’t improve its slow attack speed since it is meant for wider and longer reach. You can enhance a weapon up to LV10.

Enhancing weapons will require a set amount of resources for each enhancement level. The type of gems needed will always start off with the common ones like Yellow Souls, Magic Gems, Violet Gems, Emerald Gems, and Azure Gems. As the enhancement level increases, rarer and more advanced gems will be required. These advanced enhancement materials can be found in the later chapters so you won’t be exceeding the enhancement levels meant for your current progress.

Weapon Proficiency

Proficiency is graded by letters, with G being the lowest. Once you obtain a new weapon, it will always start with the lowest proficiency. To improve Valkyrie’s proficiency, you just need to use the weapons regularly in battle and kill things with them. You can also keep track of each weapon’s proficiency gauge from the Equip menu. Proficiency is tied to certain skills as well as a prerequisite. For example, the Defensive skill “Support Summoning (Reversal) will only become available once you’ve reached proficiency F with the weapon Herteitr. Once the skill is available, you still need to spend the required materials to learn it.
