How to Defeat the Berserker

Bosses are the big baddies of most games, meant to test your character or your party’s combat skill and readiness. Most of the time, preparation involves properly leveling up your party, giving them the best gears possible, leveling up their skills, etc.

In this page, we will quickly discuss how to overcome the very first boss of the game - The Berserker. You’ll encounter this titan at the end of the tutorial area so it is practically designed to be beaten by new players. Valkyrie Elysium is the latest title of the renowned Valkyrie series. Play as the Valkyrie as she purifies the land from evil in a collapsing world as Ragnarok looms. Summon the souls of chosen warriors called Einherjars to assist you in combat and unleash the power of Divine Arts to smite your foes.

For the entire tutorial stage, you’ll have access to two einherjars; one has the power of lightning while the other has access to ice skills. The Berserker is weak against lightning so you’ll need to summon your knight Einherjar to engage the boss. The boss doesn’t have any resistances with ice so it won’t hurt summoning your archer einherjar as well. While the knight is on the field, make sure that you use the “summon” command again to make sure that your weapon is imbued with his power. That way, the boss will take lightning damage from your normal attacks.

You can also use your only divine art to damage and stagger the boss, interrupting its advance. As you continue hitting it with lightning attacks, the Crush gauge on the left side of its HP bar will fill up. Once fully filled, Elemental Crush will occur, stunning the boss and giving your party a short window to land some free hits. (The boss will also drop more gems as you hit it while in Elemental Crush state.) Once the boss recovers, it will be immune against elemental crush for a brief time but it will still take higher damage from elemental attacks that it is weak against.

The boss is slow and has a lot of openings. If you see it starting to stomp its feet, just dash away and wait for it to finish its attack. Quickly close the gap by using your Soul Chain (grappling chain) so you can resume attacking almost immediately. It can also swing its huge sword and slam it on the ground. On the first two swings, the area near its shins are clear so you can attack there but make sure to roll or dash behind the boss since its third weapon slam covers the area in that blind spot.

Finally, don’t forget to keep using your Divine Art. Your Divine Art gauge (diamonds) will be restored rapidly as you continue building up your combo meter so you have to take advantage of that. At the same time, you don’t worry about your allies since they won’t die. If they disappear, you can just summon them again as long as you have enough souls in your Soul Gauge (blue meter). As much as possible, try to defeat a boss as quickly as you can while your einherjars are deployed so that the boss will get distracted and give you a lot of opportunities to attack. Just focus on evading the boss’ attacks, landing physical attacks, and using your divine arts and you should be able to overpower this tutorial boss in no time.

If you’re still having issues defeating this boss after the strategies mentioned, there’s no shame in setting the game’s difficulty to the lowest possible setting. Now if you can’t still defeat this boss at the easiest mode possible, then I would suggest considering playing other games instead as this game might not be for you. As you continue with the story, you’ll have to defeat major bosses and even before reaching them, you’ll even have to clear hordes of enemies with some occasional powerful mini-bosses joining the fray. So if you’re having a hard time overcoming a tutorial boss in the easiest mode possible, just imagine the struggle you’ll have when facing the tougher, normal bosses.
