Training Duel with Eygon

Eygon is your first Einherjar who’s both a reliable ally and exceptional fighter that wields the power of lightning. In this subquest, he has requested your assistance in training him via sparring in the Training Grounds. In our Training Duel with Eygon guide, we will provide an overview and general strategy on how to clear this Training Ground Subquest.

Valkyrie Elysium is the latest title of the renowned Valkyrie series. Play as the Valkyrie as she purifies the land from evil in a collapsing world as Ragnarok looms. Summon the souls of chosen warriors called Einherjars to assist you in combat and unleash the power of Divine Arts to smite your foes.

As an excellent melee fighter, Eygon will be a nightmare to deal with since he’s aggressive, has access to a good chain of combos, and even has excellent reach, thanks to his lightning powers. If you have fought Taika and Cypher before him, you’ll clearly see the difference in their behaviors and you might even get caught off guard since you’ll be pushed back into a defensive position.

First, Eygon’s combos have a combination of normal slashes and powered-up strikes imbued with lightning that can hit you even if you’re not hit by the initial slashes. He can also summon slow lightning strikes (similar to orbital laser strikes) that will home in on a spot in the battlefield and hit that area. He’s vulnerable while in this position so make sure to land a few strikes while watching out if your position is getting targeted by the lighting blast. If you get hit by any of the strikes, Valkyrie will get stunned for a few seconds, leaving her vulnerable.

Eygon also has a downward slash that can both damage and push you back but thankfully, it’s ground-based so you can do an aerial dash with the right timing to avoid getting damaged. When you’re trying to catch a breather at a safe distance, Eygon will sometimes charge himself up with lightning and close the distance while unleashing a flurry of slashes. Focus on evading this attack since you won’t be able to guard against it reliably.

He also has a nasty aerial counter so if you happen to be approaching him in mid-air via your Soul Chain, he might be able to stop your approach and get hit by his attack instead. However, that aerial slash leaves him open so if you manage to sidestep or dash behind him, you can launch him further upward and follow up with the soul chain + aerial combo. Otherwise, hitting him in mid-air will just fling him forward.

He has weakness against the weapon Sidgrani so if you have it leveled up properly at this point, it’s great to use it against him. The Sidgrani’s follow-up orbs can deal extra damage to him even while he’s evading and can also help break his guard a lot easier. Unfortunately, the orbs are not powerful enough to interrupt his assault or stagger him. Eygon is also weak against light-elemental attacks so equip a tier 1 or tier 2 Light-based divine art to deal extra damage to him and build his crush gauge.

Like before, aerial combos are very effective against him and do your best in avoiding his unblockable kick. You can also go head-to-head against him once you have felt the rhythm and telegraphed his attacks. Once you’re comfortable and once you have unlocked the skills that improve your parry/counter window, you can also let him come at you and just rely on your counterattacks until you whittle down his HP.
