How to Defeat Nagalfr Olivier

Nagalfrs are large and powerful chapter bosses that are meant to test Valkyrie’s and her party’s abilities at that point. These hideous abominations are made from transformed souls; however, some special and powerful souls give birth to even more powerful nagalfrs.

The third major Nagalfr you’ll encounter is OIivier. However, this is a special case since you’ve already collected all relics of the next Einherjar - Kristoffer. She will be fighting alongside you in this encounter which makes it obvious that Olivier will not turn into an ally. Olivier is just a single target but its variety of multi-range attacks will really keep you on your toes.

First, let’s start off with the boss’ weakness; lightning. Eygon will deal bonus damage to the opponent and while he’s deployed, make sure you select him again to imbue your weapon with lightning. Additionally, use the most powerful lightning divine art you have at the moment to easily build up the crush gauge and deal higher damage. Like before, it won’t hurt summoning Cypher in this battle as well since he can still greatly contribute to both damage-dealing and acting as a decoy. As mentioned above, Olivier will help as a third, independent ally so she won’t need souls to get deployed. In fact, she’ll stay on the field for the entirety of the battle.

Next, let’s discuss the boss’ various attacks. One of its attacks is a powerful stream of energy coming out of its tail that it will swipe towards you. You can either dodge it at the right moment or keep running towards the right to avoid getting damaged. This is a powerful attack so don’t expect to block it totally either.

At close range, it can release multiple light beams that will scatter around it. The boss can also use this attack to scatter several beams away from it. It can also release a short-range burst of energy that can damage and push back characters away from it. Also, shortly after recovering from a Crushed state, it will release energy from its body in multiple bursts, preventing anyone from ganging up on it right after it recovers.

So far, the boss only has one unblockable swipe and that’s only within melee range. Aside from the standard swinging of its weapon, it also has an explosive pounce, and a charge attack using the chains its hands are holding but these are easily telegraphed and anticipated. The boss can also release a slow-moving light orb that will track you and explode on impact. This delayed-detonation homing bomb deals a lot of damage so try to avoid getting hit.

Like other boss fights, it will be easy to down the boss to its first Crushed state. However, after it recovers, the crush gauge will build up a bit slower. That said, keep chipping away its HP, preferably at medium and long range. Use your soul chain to get close instantly and land some combos yourself to build up your art gauge quickly. You’ll eventually run out of souls to summon your einherjars if you prolong the battle so if that happens, you have no choice but to rely on Kristoffer to act as a decoy while you keep using divine arts and building your combo gauge.
