Each new Generation of Pokemon games introduces a new in-game mini-game or two, and since Generation III, a new in-game collection system similar to the Achievements system in use on traditional game consoles games.
For Pokemon Black/White and Black 2/White 2 the latter takes the form of the “Pokemon Medal Rally” which is, contrary to its title, not really a race as such in the sense that you are racing against someone to reach a specific point, but rather a race in the sense that your progress in earning the different medals that are part of the Medal Rally is actually judged by comparison to the progress that other players you meet in real life have achieved, which you get to see when you exchange records.
The fact that the vast majority of the medals that you will earn are obtained by doing things you would ordinarily do anyway means that for the most part your path to obtaining the first goal of 50 medals will be rather easy, and the more medals you earn, the faster that both the information and the medal catalog will expand.
Favorite Medal Display on your Trainer ID
In addition to offering a wide variety of medals with different levels of difficulty for the obtaining of them, the Relay Medal Race has also been integrated into the game in another way, specifically with respect to your Trainer Card, which every Pokemon Trainer knows is more than just an ID, but also their license to collect Pokemon, carry and use them, and participate in the organized Pokemon Gym and Badge System that is overseen by the Pokemon League.
If you examine your Trainer ID now, you will notice that on the bottom right corner of the photo (which is in the upper-right corner of your ID) there is a blank gold medal placed there. If you tap on the blank medal that action will load a new page you have not seen before that is part of your Trainer ID interface system, called “Your Name Medal Rally” that serves as a status page but also allows you to designate whichever medal it is you consider to be your favorite.
That can either be a medal you are particularly proud of, one you thought was harder to obtain, or just one you like the looks of - your choice mates!
On the Rally Page of your ID Interface, you will note that it displays the Number of Medals you have received so far, and lists your Favorite Medal. To select a favorite if you do not have one already, hit the back button and then in the Key Items Pouch of your Backpack select the Medal Box, and then locate the Medal you want to use, and select it to designate it as your favorite.
Now when you return to your Trainer ID and tap on the blank Medal icon the Medal you chose as your favorite will be displayed on the interface page for the Medal Rally. In addition to that, when you swap records with other players you meet and battle they will be able to see what your favorite medal is as well.
The information displayed on the Trainer ID includes the Medal's name, its image, the date that you received it, and a brief description of it in case the player you exchanged records with does not know what it represents.
That nicely covers the interactive portion as it relates to the Trainer ID and what it does for you. Now we should discuss the Rally Rewards and Rank System.
The Medal Rally Rewards and Rank System
The Pokemon Medal Rally is administered from the Medal HQ, which is located in Castelia City on the 2nd floor of the first building on the left-hand-side of the street on the first street (the one all the way to the left off of the street at the water edge from which you access the docks and piers). That is the same street that the Pokemon Gym is on, and the one that has Liberty Pier at the base.
The Medal Rally HQ is easy to spot from the street since it has a large sign with a large blank gold medal on it, and when you go inside and take the lift to the 2nd floor, as soon as you step off you will know you have arrived because in addition to the pair of large golden Rally Medal statues guarding the lift, there is a statistics board, and the staff to chat up.
There is the Harlequin from the contest that earned you a bike (and there are Rally Medals for using that bike by the way), and a girl at the table who will assess your progress.
Also at the table is a bloke you can talk to about Medal Rally details, including general information about the Medal Rally, the Medals, how the Hint Medals work, details about the Medal Box in which you store your collection of Medals, and details about your Favorite Medal, which we have already covered.
There are five types of Medals in the Rally, and they are:
Adventure Medals (Orange)
Battle Medals (Blue)
Entertainment Medals (Pink)
Challenge Medals (Purple)
Special Medals (Yellow)
There is actually a sixth type of Medal, the Hint Medal, which is Gray in color and is obtained usually in groups from Mister Medal, who you encounter at Pokemon Centers near the nurses desk whenever you have earned a new Medal or Hint Medal. When you earn the proper Medal for which the Hint Medal is standing in, Mr. Medal exchanges your new Medal for the Hint Medal.
Finally there is the bloke at the end of the table who upgrades your status and rank whenever you have earned an upgrade. The upgrades in Rank are based upon the Number of Medals you have earned, and these are:
No. Medals | Rank |
Unlock 50 Medals | Rookie Rank |
Unlock 100 Medals | Elite Rank |
Unlock 150 Medals | Master Rank |
Unlock 200 Medals | Legend Rank |
Your Introduction to the Medal Relay Race happens just before you have your First Gym Battle and obtain your first Gym Badge, so early in the game really. This is marked by your introduction to Mr. Medal.
After you exit the Gym a stranger is waiting for you outside and makes a present of a new item that is also a container. It is called the Medal Box, and it is stored and accessed via the Key Items Bag in your Backpack.
Mr. Medal then properly and politely introduces himself, and after touching upon the purpose of the Medal Box, he awards you with your first four medals to be put in the box.
Mr. Medal then proceeds to give you the basic brief on the subject of the Medal Rally, explaining that it is an event that evaluates various activities of Pokemon Trainers - including yourself - and then he covers those in a general way, before handing you your first two Hint Medals.
He explains to you that additional medals will be awarded when you earn them by meeting their individual conditions, and finally explains that when you have done so, you will be able to find him standing at the Nurses Desk in any nearby Pokemon Center, where he will happily exchange any expired Hint Medals for the real Medal that they represent.
The following Master Medal List will serve as an easy to use reference source for you as well as a ticklist so that you can keep track of all of the Medals that you have earned, and those you have yet to unlock.
You can easily use this as a ticklist by selecting the Print this Page option that SuperCheats builds into its guides as a courtesy to our readers, and to make it as easy as possible for you to make use of the sort of special resources (like this ticklist) that we create in our game guides as a value-added service to you!
You will note that there is a circle before each of the Medal Name for you to fill in when you have unlocked that Medal (or you can X it or tick it, whichever you prefer).
The ticklist below includes the Medal Name, Medal Type, and brief details on how you can unlock that Medal in order to add it to your collection. Note that the Medals are displayed in your Medal Case in the order that they were unlocked, and the order in which the various Hint Medals were received, which means that they will NOT appear in exactly the same order as they are listed below, which is why we do not organize them by Number, but by Name and Type in logical groupings.
That being the case, you should use the Name of the Medal as your key when looking them up in the table below.

(*1) - The move “Splash” is not a TM, HM, or Move Tutor Move. It is generally classified as an Egg Move because the only way that it can be obtained is for it to either already be known by a Pokemon that you have collected, or for it to be one of the base moves that an Pokemon has when you hatch it from an egg.
(*2) - The move “Struggle” is not a TM, HM, or Move Tutor Move. It is classified as an attack of last resort, and is known by all Pokemon as an unlisted (or concealed) move, and is only used when a Pokemon has completely exhausted the PP available for its “known” moves set. The reason that it is called an attack of last resort is due to the fact that the Pokemon using the move Struggle is always injured with each use, receiving roughly 50% of any damage that the move does to the opponent.
Struggle is also classified as a special, or universal, move because it can damage all types of Pokemon, including types that ordinarily would not take damage from a Normal-type move. In particular Struggle will deliver damage to Ghost-type Pokemon without it being necessary or required for the trainer to use Foresight or Oder Sleuth beforehand.
(*3) - A “noneffective” move includes any move that cannot effect the target by its use. For example when a player uses an Electric-type move against a Ground-type target, that will not result in appreciable damage.
In this instance it is an attack decision that an experienced trainer would know better than to use, and the award of this Medal Rally Medal is meant to serve as something like a consolation, or hard-luck, reward.
