Uragaan's Trail

Capture Quest: Capture an Uragaan
Unlock: Complete “A Bard's Tale,” “The Wrath of Rathalos” and the “One Chance” Villager Request.

Reward: 8600z
Contract: 550z

Time: 50 min.
Area: Volcano

Subquest A: Sever Uragaan's tail
Reward: 1000z

Subquest B: Stun Uragaan
Reward: 1000z

You must capture a Uragaan to succeed. You know the drill: attack the Uragaan until it's limping, lay down a trap, lure Uragaan onto said trap and hit it with a couple of Tranq Bombs to make the catch.

The Supply Box for this quest holds an EZ Shock Trap, but it's always a good idea to bring an extra trap with you on a capture quest to avoid blowing the whole thing by setting your one and only trap at the wrong time. You can make a basic Pitfall Trap by combining a Spider Web with Ivy to make a Net and then combining the Net with a Trap Tool (buyable at the market) to make the trap. You can also make a Shock Trap by combining a Thunderbug with a Trap Tool.

Refer to the previous quest walkthrough for help fighting Uragaan.

Once in the quest, remove the Map, First-aid Meds, Rations, Cool Drinks, Poison Knives, EZ Shock Trap and Tranq Bombs from the Supply Box before leaving camp.

Uragaan spawns in Area 5 but may move to a nearby area before you're able to get there. As with any capture quest, the idea here is avoid killing your target, instead weakening it just enough to capture it. See the walkthrough for “The Volcano's Fury” for an in-depth strategy for battling Uragaan.

Completing Subquest A requires severing the end of Uragaan's tail. If you're using any melee weapon other than a Hammer, you can sever the end of Uragaan's tail by focus your attacks on that area. Accomplishing this takes quite a bit of work, so don't bother unless you're really determined to complete this subquest.

You must stun Uragaan to complete Subquest B. To stun a monster, you must attack its head quite a bit. When stunned, stars will appear above the monster's head and it will be incapacitated for a short while. Only certain attacks carry the potential to stun, and some weapon types are better capable of stunning than others. It is possible to stun a monster with the Sword & Shield using the Shield Attack move, but the Hammer is by far the best weapon type for stunning. The reward for completing this subquest is1000z, which is pocket change this far into the game, so there's really no need to bother with this one.

Hit the weakened and trapped Uragaan with two Tranq Bombs to catch it and complete the quest.

Cease attacking as soon as you spot Uragaan limping. Uragaan will limp when it's close to death and retreat to Area 6 to rest. In Area 6, it will sleep on the ledge at the north end of Area 6 where you can't reach it. However, Uragaan is a light sleeper and will awaken if you dash by.

As soon as you enter Area 6 with the sleeping Uragaan, set the trap somewhere in the middle of the area and position yourself so your hunter and Uragaan are on opposite sides of the trap. Once Uragaan triggers the trap, hit it with two Tranq Bombs to catch it and complete the quest.
