A Royal Pain

Capture Quest: Capture a Royal Ludroth
Unlock: Complete “Save Our Boat”

Reward: 4000z
Contract: 200z

Time: 50 min.
Area: Deserted Island
Unstable Environment

Subquest A: Wound Royal Ludroth's mane
Reward: 400z

Subquest B: Sever Royal Ludroth's tail
Reward: 400z

Since you've slain a Royal Ludroth, capturing one should be a cinch. Recall that the goal of this type of quest is not to kill the target monster, but to weaken it until it's limping and then use a trap and Tranq Bombs to capture it.

The Supply Box for this quest holds an EZ Shock Trap, but it's always a good idea to bring an extra trap with you on a capture quest to avoid blowing the whole thing by setting your one and only trap at the wrong time. You can make a basic Pitfall Trap by combining a Spider Web with Ivy to make a Net and then combining the Net with a Trap Tool (buyable at the market) to make the trap. You can make a Shock Trap by combining a Thunderbug with a Trap Tool

At the start of the quest, be sure to remove the EZ Shock Trap and red Tranq Bombs from the Supply Box, as well as the Map, First-aid Meds and Rations before setting out. Royal Ludroth is in Area 9 to start, so make your way there.

There's no need to hit the Royal Ludroth with a Paintball when you first spot him, as he is easy to track on this map. Just get right to attacking. Completing Subquest A requires wounding Royal Ludroth's mane and completing Subquest B requires severing his tail. Start by working on removing his tail, and once that's done, concentrate your attacks on his mane.

Set a trap for Royal Ludroth after he limps into another area.

There are only Felyne to worry about in Area 9, though they can become quite aggressive when one of their own takes damage. Angered Felyne target hunters almost exclusively, so steer clear of any you see carrying a barrel bomb. The Royal Ludroth may move into Area 5 where there are two Ludroth. The Ludroth here can make things difficult, so consider taking a moment to clear them out. You should be able to fell one in a few hits with your current weapon.

When the Royal Ludroth's stamina is low, as indicated by his deflated mane and drooling mouth, he will enter Area 10 and soon dive into the water there to recover. Though he may have limped out of Area 9 to get to Area 10, he might not stick around Area 10 for very long, so you risk wasting your trap if you don't set it quickly enough. If you only brought one trap with you, you might want to hold off on setting it until Royal Ludroth enters Area 12.

If the Royal Ludroth has yet to limp and he is in the water in Area 10, dive in after him and continue attacking until he staggers into Area 11. In Area 11, swim toward the exit to Area 12 and he will likely follow. Enter Area 12, get on land and wait for him to appear at the entrance. Set the EZ Shock Trap down on land and lure the Royal Ludroth onto the trap by positioning yourself so the trap is between you and him. Hit Royal Ludroth with two Tranq Bombs when he steps onto the trap to capture him and complete the quest.
