The game allows up to two players to tackle the Story and History Modes in splitscreen mode. This multiplayer feature unfortunately is only available to the Switch version of the game, not in the 3DS. To enable this feature, do the following:
If you want to change the controller assignment for Player 1’s, you can press the Home button, select Controllers then Change Grip/ Order.
The individual Joy-cons can be used as controllers for two players and the control scheme will be a bit different compared to when you’re using a full controller. However, there’s a catch for using the Joy-cons individually in this game and that’s where the button inputs are not immediately recognized by the game. You may encounter moments where you have to press the same button 2-3 times before the command gets executed by the character.
Be warned as well that due to the Switch’s hardware limitation, you’ll encounter frame Drops and lags, especially when there’s a lot of things going on at the same time (like fighting a horde of enemies and using Awakening/ Warrior Specials). There will also be instances where enemies will appear in a delayed manner because the console will be trying to keep up in processing the enemy spawns. That said, don’t be surprised if some enemies or NPCs are not visible even if their icons are visible in the Map.
This is especially problematic in History Mode since almost all Map types require at least 2,000 kills as one of the requirements to get an S-rank. You’ll have a hard time farming kills if the enemy foot soldiers are not appearing fast enough as they’re supposed to. The workaround for this is fighting close to each other and refraining for using too much Warrior Special or Awakenings by sticking with basic combos.
