Hunting still play a major role in the game’s gameplay and progression since it’s the main source of income. At the same time, there are perk challenges focused on hunting animals. In FC5, you don’t need to hunt animals to unlock upgrades. Animal skin and meat can be sold at a hefty amount of cash at any store which will enable you to purchase new weapons, outfits, and vehicles. “Clean” kills done by using arrows are still recommended since they yield more meat.
Prey animals provide meat and bait which can be thrown to lure in predator animals. If you have baits in stock, you can use them while inside a friendly outpost to easily lure in and kill a predator. That way, you’ll have a store nearby to sell the skins you collected from them and you’ll have an easier time killing the animal. For tougher targets like bears and elk, killing them with guns seems to be a better option instead of chasing after them and tracking them down to kill them with a lot of arrows. Kills done by explosives and fire can damage the meat but still be sold though at an extremely low price. I recommend getting the Harvest Master perk (Cost: 8 pts) early on since it doubles the loot you’ll get from both harvesting plants and Hunting animals.
There are Hunting grounds scattered throughout the county. They can be marked by finding magazines for them or by simply viewing the roadside signs. Once the hunting ground is found, they’ll be permanently marked on the map and you can safely sell the maps or magazines that revealed their locations.
There’s also a fishing minigame but will require you to have a fishing rod equipped first. You can find them at certain fishing spots in the map or you can purchase them from weapon shops. Once acquired, they’ll be registered in the utility wheel menu. It’s also recommended to get the Fisher King perk (Cost: 4 pts) to make it easier to catch fishes and unlock new flies that can be used to lure in bigger and better fishes. New fishing spots can be revealed in your map by finding and reading fishing magazines found in various areas in the county.
