Story Missions are major operations that will move the story forward. These are usually lengthy operations which will require a bit more preparation. Before selecting the mission, you’ll see the summary of objectives and recommended character level. I advise taking missions with your entire squad’s average level is the same or above the recommended level. There are also optional objectives that will give you additional exp and rewards upon completion. Not only that, these objectives also help ensuring that you’ll get a good post-battle rating.
Before starting a mission, you’ll be taken first to the briefing screen where you’ll see the following options:
Other than the mandatory Story missions, the game offers Free Missions where you can farm exp, money, and ragnite crystals for your team. There are four types of free missions each with varying objectives: Annihilation, Takedown, Reconnaissance, and Maneuver. These missions will take place in locations where completed story missions took place making the areas already familiar for you. You can take these Free Missions at your own pace.
Another type of mission are Defensive Battles. The enemies may launch attacks to retake the areas you took from them. It’s always recommended to take and win these battles to ensure that your army maintain the advantage. You’ll know if a Defensive Battle is available by seeing a State of War gauge on the mission description in the lower left part of the screen and by seeing a red and blue shape blocks representing the allied and enemy army.
