In Spiritfarer, you get to control Stella who has received her new duty from Charon in order to assist spirits with their final requests and wishes. In doing so, you’ll be fulfilling the last remaining days of the lives of these spirits before they can move on to the afterlife. Buck is a unique spirit since he’s the only one that you cannot help through the Everdoor,

Once you have the Double Jump and Bounce abilities, set sail to the Hikarishima Lighthouse. You’ll be able to go to the lighthouse and watch a cutscene on you reach it, and Buck will be able to join you. Once he reveals his true form, you can get XP Potions from his Spirit Events.
When improving Buck’s mood, he can harvest mushrooms for you. Once it becomes better, he’ll give other food items and eventually he’ll also be able to give you XP Potions by harvesting them.
Fulfilling the requests of Buck and completing them will make him happy. He is the only Spirit that you cannot take to the Everdoor as it’s implied that he hasn’t met Stella in his previous life.
