During your travels, you'll chance upon locked purple chests. These contain rare equipment, skill books, or consumables. To open these chests, you have to obtain a specific specialty called Lockpicking by completing the sidequest "Survive This!" in Chapter 6. Furthermore, all the chests in the post-game dungeon Maze of Tribulations are locked, making this specialty a requirement if you want to enjoy post-game loot.
It's recommended to prioritize getting this specialty once the sidequest becomes available. After getting it, it's worth traveling and unlocking all the available chests that you can access by now. This specialty doesn't require any upgrades so you'll only have to spend SP on this once.
