During a hold up, you can select to Negotiate. If there are more than one shadow, you have to move the cursor to the shadow you want to negotiate with. Take note that selecting any of the options above will end the battle, regardless if there are other surviving shadows. You can only negotiate with one shadow per battle. You can ask the cornered shadow the following:

  • Lend their power
  • Give you money (random amount)
  • Give you items (random)

You can easily convince shadows to give you money and items if you happen to have a persona of the same type in your possession. The first option however, is vital since it’s the only way to get new Personas for free that you can use for Fusion or registering in your compendium.

Asking shadows to join you is not a straightforward game. You have to take note of their personality which is found in the top left corner of the screen during the hold-up formation, before you start the negotiation.

Your answer to their questions will determine your success in convincing them to join you or not. Take note of their "reactions", usually indicated by what will appear over their heads. If you landed an answer they'll like, you'll see musical notes appearing as shown below.

If the negotiation is successful, you’ll gain the shadow’s mask and becomes your persona. You can even use it immediately if you’re in the middle of a dungeon.

Even if your negotiation is successful, your character’s level will also determine whether the shadow joins you or not. If your level is too low for the shadow you’re trying to get, that shadow will leave a random item instead as compensation. The battle will also end immediately.

There will be times that a shadow will beg for its life when put in a dire situation (alone and dying). From hereon, the shadow itself will negotiate for you to spare it. Should you agree, the same negotiation options will appear (ask for money, item, or join you). Usually, timid shadows are most likely to beg while irritable shadows will never beg.
