After completing the Championship in Montellino, we were presented with the choices for the next stage in the Festival - the Road Trip to Saint-Martin. Those choices - and their Cars - were:

    US Street Muscle Championships

-- 1968 Dodge Dart HEMI Super Stock - 250K Credits - US Street Muscle (Recommended)

    -- 1969 Dodge Charger R/T - 64K Credits - US Street Muscle Class (Recommended)

-- 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge - 44K Credits - US Street Muscle Class (Recommended)

    -- 1970 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 - 85K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS-454 - 48K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427 - 90K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T- 120K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1968 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds 442 - 40K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    GT Championships

    -- 2010 Maserati Gran Turismo S - 120K Credits - GT Cars Class (Recommended)

-- 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed - 200K Credits - GT Cars Class

    -- 2012 Jaguar XKR-S - 120K Credits - GT Cars Class

    Retro Saloons Championships

-- 1988 BMW M5 - FREE if you have the Car Pack - Retro Saloons Class (Recommended)

    -- 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II - 26K Credits - Retro Saloons Class (Recommended)

    -- 1995 Audi RS 2 Avant - 26K Credits - Retro Saloons Class

    -- 1997 BMW M3 - 10K Credits - Retro Saloons Class

    -- 1991 BMW M3 - 16K Credits - Retro Saloons Class

    -- 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 - 53K Credits - Retro Saloons Class

Having obtained my fill (at least for now) of Muscle Car racing in Montellino, I opted for the choice that was as far away from Muscle Car racing as you can get from what we were offered - the Retro Saloons Class!

With that choice made, it was down to what car I would use, and after debating the matter and consulting the crew in the SuperCheats Bullpen, I went with the 1988 BMW M5, which is an unassuming and pleasant car to drive.

The '88 M5 is found in the first monthly Car Pack for FH2 - the Mobile 1 Car Pack - which is free when you have the Car Pass but otherwise costs $5. Once you have the pack you can download the six Cars from it - but the '88 BMW M5 is available FREE to all as the sample car from the pack.

So even though it looked like I was choosing a car you had to pay for in order to drive, nope - that one is a freebie. So hey, win-win!

The Road Trip to Saint-Martin

The Road Trip to Saint-Martin

The Road Trip begins from the Horizon Event Tent at Montellino and takes the scenic route from there to the Event Tent in Saint-Martin. The idea being that along the way you get used to the driving characteristics of the new car you have chosen.

This is also a great opportunity to pick up some more car photos for the Horizon Promo Collection... Just saying.

These RT events are not really races in the sense that there is a first place winner or you should even care about what position you are in when you arrive, they are supposed to be more like a social event and the social glue that binds the participants together as a group. Much like the party scene that we presume is going on in the background overnight, even though we never actually get to see it.

That said, this RT event (and the others) has a timer associated with it, and when you arrive - assuming you did so without the timer having expired - you receive a bonus of XP for your efforts.

The Races at Saint-Martin

Saint-Martin Race 1: Short Circuit Race

Race 1 0f 4 - Short Circuit Retro Saloons Circuit Race (6,324 Cr. / 4,216 XP)

A trio of relatively short circuits with checkpoints spread evenly throughout, it really does not help that this is one of the races that is run in the rain. The wet pavement makes for some forced slowing - and when you watch the video embedded above you will easily understand why I wasn't happy with the way that the Beemer behaved on this course.

Still it certainly shakes things up a bit...

Saint-Martin Race 2: Highway Street Race

Race 2 of 4 - Highway Street Race Retro Saloons Street Race (6,561 Cr. / 4,374 XP)

This is a typical Street Race in that it is on the street and there are civilian Cars present. In the case of this specific Street Race you will want to bear in mind that it has just finished a heavy rain, so the streets are slick and wet and very slippery!

That said, as long as you maintain tight control over your car then no preblemos!

Saint-Martin Race 3: Highway Sprint Trail Race

Race 3 of 4 - Highway Sprint Retro Saloons Trail Race (6,562 Cr. / 4,375 XP)

This point-to-point race is run at the top-end of the speeds for the class though that goal is tempered by road conditions and the presence of checkpoints that are placed ins SUCH a manner that you simply cannot avoid the series of very sharp turns on the course.

There is also the matter of this being a Sprint Race. They are not kidding about that - the competition is going like the hammers of hell the entire way - so the only time you can really gain and pass is in the turns. That being so it is a very good idea for you to get comfortable with really putting on the heat in the corners.

Saint-Martin Race 4: Le Prince Cross Country Race

Race 4 of 4 - Le Prince Cross Country Retro Saloons Cross Country (5,265 Cr. / 3,510 XP)

What we have here is a rip-roaring race through the golf course in which you literally tear up the course. That is to say I am happy we don't have to pay for the damage that we do in the process!

You should be very familiar with the cross-country format by now - well for this race there is NO forgiveness. The Drivatars are running like the hammers of hell, pedal to the floor the whole way. The first driver to make a mistake falls back and regaining position once that happens is not very likely. Because they are driving like it really matters to them.

The course is carefully divided by checkpoints to keep the drivers honest - but hitting them all means either running the course a few times to learn the angles - which is not a bad idea now that I think on it - or paying close attention to the markers and signs.

Listen, seriously, if you make one mistake you may as well restart - it is that tough a race. A single turn that is wider than required and you are talking about not placing - forget winning! I am telling you second place is good.

Either way you need to do everything - navigation and notice - while running at top speed. There you go - that is all you need to know to win!

With the races now won Ben asks you to once again meet up at the local hub, where you select the next race series and the car you will race...The choices are:

  • US Street Muscle Championships

-- 1968 Dodge Dart HEMI Super Stock - 250K Credits - US Street Muscle (Recommended)

    -- 1969 Dodge Charger R/T - 64K Credits - US Street Muscle Class (Recommended)

-- 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge - 44K Credits - US Street Muscle Class (Recommended)

    -- 1970 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 - 85K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS-454 - 48K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427 - 90K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T- 120K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

    -- 1968 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds 442 - 40K Credits - US Street Muscle Class

  • Super GT Championships

    -- 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - 196K Credits - Super GT Class (Recommended)

    -- 2012 Ferrari F12berlinetta - 245K Credits - Super GT Class (Recommended)

    -- 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR - 240K Credits - Super GT Class (Recommended)

    -- 2007 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione - 224K Credits - Super GT Class

    -- 2012 Aston Martin Vanquish - 250K Credits - Super GT Class

    -- 2011 Aston Martin V12 Zagato (Ville d'Este) - 360K Credits - Super GT Class

    -- 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series - 195K Credits - Super GT Class

  • Group B Monsters Championship

    -- 1982 Lancia 037 Stradale - 196K Credits - Group B Monsters Class (Recommended)

    -- 1983 Audi Sport quattro -- 120K Credits - Group B Monsters Class

    -- 1985 Ford RRS200 Evolution -- 120K Credits - Group B Monsters Class

    -- 1986 Lancia Delta S4 - 160K Credits - Group B Monsters Class

After giving the matter some thought the GT Championship seems like the next thing - and by now the price of a car that runs quarter of a mil should be within the grasp of everyone at this point in play....

That said, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with its wicked gull-wing doors is just the thing!
