FH2 DLC Limits

Last Updated:

Recently Turn 10 confirmed as fact some issues that were making the rounds as rumors: While there are two full and complete versions of the game - one for the previous gen platform, and one for the next gen - only the version for the XOne will be receiving DLC Expansion Content.

That fact is worthy of a detailed examination...

Last night (as I write this) the first Premium DLC expansion pack for FH2 hit the servers and became available to the players.

For just $5 the Mobil 1 Car Pack adds six all new Cars to the game (those are a 1957 Maserati 300 S, 1977 BMW M5, 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco 16v, 2013 Renault Clio RS 200, 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, and 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe) - actually you did not have to pay anything if you just wanted the '77 BMW M5 as that one was the "free taste" of the Pack and could be installed for free.

It is important to note that while the Car Pack was added to the servers technically for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the DLC was only released on Xbox One, and the same will be true for future DLC. If you are curious as to why the answer is simple - Turn 10 and Microsoft have no plans for DLC support for the lastgen X360 version of the game.

Turn 10s community manager Brian Ekberg explained the why behind this in a post to the official forums for the game, saying "We are currently planning to release DLC only for the Xbox One version of Forza Horizon 2."

In addition to that limitation, it was also revealed that FH2 on X360 will not have any connection to the celebrated Forza Rewards system either -- or the active Hub that was introduced with FH2.

If you are not aware, Forza Rewards is an ALL FREE digital tracking platform that maintains a record of all of your progress for all of the other games in the two series and provides the players with in-game rewards in the form of both Credits and reward Cars on a monthly basis, based upon the player's Tier Level in the system.

Rewards Tiers

Basically The Hub on XOne - in conjunction with the stand-alone Forza Rewards service -- keeps track of pretty much all of your activities and accomplishments in the games, from Achievements to specific milestones and accomplishments that are measured against the 11,500 Points in total available in the program spanning all of the games from Forza Motorsports 2 through FH2 and everything in between.

For most of the other games in the series the payout system remains in place and as usual, but that is not the case with FH2, as Ekberg revealed: "Forza Rewards benefits are only available in the Xbox One version of Forza Horizon 2," he states.

"This means that Xbox 360 players will not receive Forza Rewards credits or Cars. In addition, progress in the 360 version of Forza Horizon 2 does not count towards your Forza Rewards Tier Level score.

"Only progress in the Xbox One version of Forza Horizon 2 will count towards your overall Forza Score (and Tier Level) in Forza Rewards," he confirmed.

That actually makes a simple sort of sense, considering that they had to choose one or the other anyway as otherwise had they allowed progress in both to count there would have been an extra thousand-odd points added to the system.

The Same Game But Different

Don't let the announcement fool you, FH2 is basically the same game on both platforms, the exceptios being issues like placement of the Bonus Boards, a significant difference in appearance (the XOne version of the game was created with its all new Graphical World Engine whereas the X360 version was built using the FM5 Engine), there are a myriad of other small Differences.

Perhaps the greatest difference is the lack of connectivity and special challenges in the version for X360. That version does not include support for the Drivatar System and does not download the Skills and unofficial racer files that are used to deliver AI racers that drive like the human gamer that they are based upon.

Not only is there no Drivatar in the 360 version, there are also no weather effects either, and there are Differences in the Achievements Scheme as well...

To put the whole DLC issue into perspective for you, consider this: in addition to specialized Car Packs based on version and privileges (think VIP), in addition to the free DLC released at launch, there are at least six months of Car Packs slated for delivery (which is why buying the Car Pack Pass makes a lot of sense for XO owners).
