Xbox LIVE Acievements

There are 50 Achievements in the game, worth a total of 1000g

The Introduction of the Achievements Scheme for games on the Xbox consoles (and Trophies for the PlayStation platforms) adds something of a double-edged sword to the gaming community because a lot of gamers came to view these as the primary means of representing skill in gaming.

As a result if a game studio and its wizards fail to take the Achievements / Trophy system seriously it can ruin a game. That is especially so when they have Achievements that require the player to do things that they would not ordinarily do as part of game play.

Fortunately for us, the Wizards who have created Dying Light took the time and effort to create a set of Achievements that largely stick to normal game play activities.

Achievements come in many flavors - the formal and proper kind that are unlocked for doing just what they sound like in their descriptions, but then there are the duplicitous ones that are awarded for doing something you did not know you did...
Achievements come in many flavors - the formal and proper kind that are unlocked for doing just what they sound like in their descriptions, but then there are the duplicitous ones that are awarded for doing something you did not know you did...

Below is the list of Achievements for Dying Light along with any advice we think might be helpful to you...

  1. A Game of Catch (10g) Kill 50 enemies with throwing weapons.

This one can be unlocked using pretty much any weapons that are classified as Throwing Weapons. You may be tempted to just make the weapons to use for this but we caution against that. First of all, as you work towards unlocking some of the other Achievements that require you to kill Rais' men you will obtain a large number and variety of Throwing Weapons.

That being so this is one of the ones that will be easiest if you delay working on it until close to the end of the story, when you have a surplus of Throwing Weapons to use.

  2. A Long Way Down (25g) Jump to the water from the Infamy Bridge (Slums) at night.

This is easiest to do if you wait until you have completed the story missions that take you to the bridge area at which point you will unlock the Safe Zone on the bridge. Then you can sleep there until night, drop down to the bridge deck, and dive into the water from there.

Note: You must jump from the bridge deck - jumping from the top of any of the supporting columns does not seem to unlock this.

  3. Agile (25g) Reach Agility Prof. Level 10.

This will come along with regular story play so there is no need for you to work on it specifically.

  4. BBQ (10g) Stick a Burning Zombie on Spikes.

You can easily get this once you have the grapple skill though it is also a bugged Achievement - for example we unlocked it when a Bomber blew up after we tossed a Molotov into a group of infected in the street - the explosion knocked a burning zombie into a Spike Trap, unlocking this Achievement.

  5. Blinded by the Lights (10g) Blind 25 Volatiles with Flares or a Flashlight.

You will want to wait until you have unlocked and obtained the Blueprint for Zaid's Ultraviolet (UV) Flares (instead of just red like the regular ones). Also Zaid's Flares last longer than a regular one.

  6. Bolter Hunting (25g) Catch 5 Bolters.

You can grind this out once you advance the story to the point where the Doc asks you to get him the Bolter Tissue Sample. You have to do this at night.

  7. Can't Touch This (25g) Kill 20 enemies in a row without taking damage.

This should come naturally as you play and should not require any special action on your part.

  8. Disaster Recovery (10g) Get 15 Relief Packages.

This will come naturally as you play through the story thanks to there being a bunch of side-quest, missions, and optional activities (like Quarantined Zone Clearing) that require you to gather them.

  9. Electrified! (10g) Catch 25 enemies in the Electric Fence Trap.

This one will require you to make the special effort to lure in infected and trigger the Electrical Trapsin order to unlock it.

It is possible to complete the game without actually unlocking this, however once you HAVE completed the game - but you CAN unlock this AFTER you complete the story as the game then switches to a freeplay mode.

  10. Enlightened! (10g) Blind 25 Enemies in the Light Trap.

This one requires you to make the specific effort to unlock it. The easiest way to do that is to use Firecrackers to lure in the infected and then trigger a Light Trap - bearing in mind that you do not have to have all 25 infected in the trap at the same time.

  11. Everybody Dance Now (10g) Simultaneously Shock 5 Monsters with Electricity.

This one requires you to make a specific effort to unlock it. The easiest way to do this is to go to a place with an Electrical Trap and throw Conducting Liquid on the ground there, then use Firecrackers to lure in infected and then set off the trap.

  12. Everybody Knows Kyle (10g) Reach Survivor Rank Level 12.

This will come along with regular story play so there is no need for you to work on it specifically.

  13. Gabriel's Sword (10g) Add a fire elemental effect to a sword or a khopesh.

This will come along with regular story play so there is no need for you to work on it specifically. Once you get an appropriate Blueprint you will want to do this upgrade anyway. Just saying.

  14. Harran Athletics (25g) Take part in 10 Co-Op Competitions.

This is a multi-player online Achievement that will require you to make the specific effort to go online and find a group to play with. Ideally you should do this with mates, since you can rely on mates not to quit in the middle of a session.

  15. Harran Shooting Club (10g) Kill 50 Enemies with Shooting Weapons.

Due to the basic structure of the world in Dying Light this is one of the Achievements that you are going to have to specifically work on. First of all during the first half of the game firearms are more difficult to find and what is worse, ammunition for them is very scarce.

Once you reach the halfway point though, while firearms are no easier to obtain for the most part, ammunition is a LOT easier to get - especially when the Survivor Merchants start selling it.

Strategically you want to refrain from using firearms in outside environments since the use is loud and draws in Runner-type Infected as well as Volatiles. If you restrict your use of firearms to just indoor encounters you will still have plenty of opportunity to unlock this.

  16. High Flyer (10g) Kill 25 enemies using Ground Pound or Drop Attack

This should come naturally as you play through the story since there will be a LOT of instances where doing the Drop Attack is the preferred manner of killing the Infected.

  17. Homo Homini Lupus Est (10g) Save 15 Survivors from Rais's men.

This one will NOT come naturally during story play unless you specifically go looking for encounters in which Rais' men are torturing Survivors.

Our strategy was to rescue every Survivor we could manage while playing through the story and then, before starting the very last mission, grinding these out by going through Old Town looking for this type of encounter.

Note: You CAN do these in The Slums but you will find that they are far more often encountered in The Old Town District.

  18. Hush, Hush Now (25g) Quiet a Screamer.

This will come naturally as part of the story play. That said, it is our considered advice that you pull out your Shotgun and blow away any infected kids you encounter - no question asked.

  19. I'm a Runner and a Fighter (25g) Complete 15 Agility or Power Challenges.

This one requires you to specifically and actively focus on and complete the Challenges.

The good news though is that they all count, so you do not have to do 15 of one or the other - you just need to do 15 period.

  20. Is It Really Necessary? (5g) Kill your first Infected.

This will unlock naturally as part of the story play.

  21. Italian Plumber (10g) Kill an Enemy with a Wrench, using Vault Followed by a Drop Attack.

This is a LOT simpler than it sounds. Basically it is an homage to the Mario game series and to unlock it all you need to do is wait until after you have unlocked the Vault skill (the ability to launch yourself into the air by using the Jump Button on an Infected) and equip a Pipe Wrench.

Once you have the Pipe Wrench equipped simply run towards a group of Infected and use the Jump/Vault. While in the air, hold down the Attack Button and you will land on top of an Infected and brain them using the Pipe Wrench - at which point this Achievement will unlock.

    Easy-Peasy Lemon-Squeezy!

  22. It's All In the Writing (25g) Find all Text Collectibles.

This will NOT come naturally as you play through the game - as it requires you to specifically seek out and obtain all of the following Collection Items: (1) Notes, (2) Battle Journals, and (3) Voicemail Messages.

The more difficult to obtain are the Vmail Messages - we have included a proper guide to all of the Collection Groups - look in the top section of the Nav Menu on the right of the guide and you will see a Collapsible Section called "Collections" in which we have placed the related mini-guides.

When you are seeking out Collection items using the mini-guide the most effective strategy and the easy path to success is to do the following: (1) Consult the map that is included at the head of each of the zones for the given collection mini-guide. (2) Once you are in the vicinity of the collectible on the map, consult the mini-guide for clues as to the location of the collectible, then use the Survivor Sense to locate it (they appear as Orange Markers). Finally (3) Collect the Collectible.

  23. I've Got Your Back (10g) Complete 1 quest in a Co-Op Game.

This is a multi-player online Achievement that will require you to make the specific effort to go online and find a group to play with. Ideally you should do this with mates, since you can rely on mates not to quit in the middle of a session.

  24. Judo Master (10g) Throw 50 Enemies with Grapple.

Grapple is a passive/active skill and ability that is unlocked via the leveling system. To use it you trigger the Action Button ('A' on Xbox) and the Left Joystick to indicate the direction you want the infected to be thrown, at which point you will Grapple them and throw them in that direction.

While you do not have to do so, it may be a bit more fun to combine this action with Spike Traps. Well, fun and decidedly pleasing.

  25. The Legend of Harran (25g) Reach Survivor Rank Level 18.

This will come naturally as part of story play and does not require you to make any special efforts.

  26. Little Craftsman (10g) Craft your first item.

This will come naturally as part of story play and does not require you to make any special efforts. You're going to be crafting a LOT of different resources over your game play, particularly Med Kits, Zaid's Flares, Molotov Cocktails, and the like not to mention weapon upgrades and not to mention the piles and piles of Firecrackers you will make.

    Just saying...

  27. Lucky 7 (25g) Win 7 Co-Op Competitions.

This is a multi-player online Achievement that will require you to make the specific effort to go online and find a group to play with. Ideally you should do this with mates, since you can rely on mates not to quit in the middle of a session.

  28. Master Crafter (25g) Use Blueprints at least 100 times.

You'll have no troubles at all unlocking this - you could unlock it just with the Med Kits you will craft as you play through the story mode.

  29. Mount Everest (25g) Climb at least 8,848 meters on various objects.

If you do not use the Grapple Hook for regular game play and traveling this will unlock naturally before you reach the final mission in the game. If you DO use the Grapple Hook though, chances are it will NOT unlock naturally before you reach the end of the game.

We recommend that you not use the Grapple Hook for regular travel - we did not and we unlocked this just as we completed Mission 14: The Clinic.

  30. Mouths Wide Open (25g) Kill a Volatile.

Even if you somehow avoid facing off with and killing a Volatile during the story mode of play you will find yourself forced to deal with them when doing the optional activities such as those that are part of the Achievement Trespassing (25g) Complete all Quarantine Zones due to the presence of a significant number of Volatiles inside the Underground Parking Quarantine Zone in The Slums.

Bear in mind that Zaid's Flares will cause any Volatiles trying to attack you to be temporarily blinded (and thus run away from you) while using the UV Flashlight / Hand Torch will also temporarily blind them though not necessarily cause them to run away.

The easiest method for dealing with them is to run away. When you are indoors (such as when you are doing the Underground Parking Quarentine Zone) running away is not really an option, so your best approach there is to stun them with the Flashlight and then blow off their heads with your Shotgun.

    Just saying...

  31. Now It's Safe (25g) Capture all Safe Zones.

Look on the map for any Red House symbols, go to them, kill all of the infected present at them, close their gate if they have one, and restore the electricity to get the lights back on and make these return to function as a Safe Zone and Safe House.

Once you restore them to operative status they may be used for sleeping and to access your stored kit and resources.

  32. Open Sesame (10g) Perform 10 Successful Lockpicks.

This will come naturally as the story mode progresses as you cannot avoid picking locks - both on doors and on crates.

  33. Pheidippides (25g) Run, Move or Sprint at least 42,195m.

This will come naturally as you progress through the story mode.

  34. Polyamory (15g) Complete 5 Quests in a single Co-Op Game with the same 3 partners.

This is a multi-player online Achievement that will require you to make the specific effort to go online and find a group to play with. Ideally you should do this with mates, since you can rely on mates not to quit in the middle of a session.

  35. Prom Night (25g) Survive a Night Pursuit of Level 2 or Higher.

This will come naturally as you progress through the story mode. In fact there is one of the missions that you will end while it is still night (I think it is the one where you end up in the Arena at Rais' Compound/HQ).

As it is completing you will end up being "chased" by Volatiles just as the sun rises, which then results in this being unlocked.

  36. Strong (25g) Reach Power Prof. Level 10.

This will come naturally as you progress through the story mode and requires no special efforts on your part to unlock.

  37. This is Harraaaaan! (25g) Kill 100 enemies by kicking them off the rooftops/cliffs.

This is one of the more difficult Achievements in the game largely due to the fact that it requires specific efforts that are counter-intuitive to regular game play.

When you encounter an infected on a rooftop your first-instinct is NOT to kick them until they go over the edge, your first-instinct is to kill them as quickly and efficiently as possible!

That said you should take the time - and make the effort - to kick them off the edge at least until you finally unlock this one.

  38. Trade Company (10g) Sell items worth 10,000 dollars.

This will come naturally as you progress through the story mode and requires no special efforts on your part to unlock. You will eventually HAVE to sell items as your bag fills so yeah.

  39. Trespassing (25g) Complete all Quarantine Zones.

This is probably the second hardest Achievement in the game largely as it falls within the Optional Activities area of playing Dying Light.

You will need to seek out each of the Quarantine Zones on each map - but to help you with this and so you can tell if you have them all here is the list:

    1. The Slums: Bright Mountain Tunnel (Far to the South-Central on the Map)

    2. The Slums: Chemical Storage (Far West in the Central part of the Map)

    3. The Slums: Sunny Apartments (West side of the Map)

    4. The Slums: Stuffed Turtle (Central part and a little North on the Map)

    5. The Slums: Underground Parking (Central Slums on the Map)

    6. Old Town: New Antalya Apartments (Deep South on the Map)

    7. Old Town: Parking Lot (Central West on the Map)

    8. Old Town: Striped Dragon Hotel (North and West on the Map)

As you complete the eight designated and optional Quarantine Zones it is a really good idea to scrounge for supplies and resources at each of them. There is an incredible amount of useful resources at each.

  40. We're All In This Together (10g) Save 15 survivors from zombies.

This will come naturally as you progress through the story mode and requires no special efforts on your part to unlock. Mostly because you cannot tell the difference between an infected encounter and one with Rais' men until you are there.

  41. The Whole Story (100g) Finish all side quests.

This one requires specific and dedicated effort since at least in theory you can actually complete the story and game without doing any of these. But you should not do that - the side-quests insert into the game a LOT of details that you otherwise would not experience.

    Secret Achievements

Secret Achievements are normally made secret because simply reading the description and name can function as a spoiler...

  42. Bittersweet (50g) Complete the game

Story-related and cannot be missed unless you quit playing before this point but why would you do that??

  43. Flight of the Crane (10g) Jump from the Crane

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  44. Making Faces (25g) Show the outside world that you're still alive

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  45. My left or your left? (15g) Meet with Rais

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  46. Now You Can Come In (25g) Find Camden

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  47. Sightseeing (25g) Reach the Old Town

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  48. Snake in the grass (15g) Escape the arena

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  49. Tied loose end (25g) Deal with Tahir

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  50. Vertigo (25g) Activate the Amplifier

    Story-related and cannot be missed.
