Kingdom Hearts Guide - Sidequests
Equipment
Strong as Sora may be, he's not much of a match with his fists. That's where your equipment comes in.
Everything from Keychains to Staffs, Shields and even Accessories are listed here. We'll take a look at their states and what to equipped and when.
Before looking more into equipment, you must understand these three things:
- ATK is the stat listed under the weapons name on the right. That is the amount of damage guaranteed to be done with every hit, provided the enemy isn't invincible. STR is the amount that is added to your base STR. While attacking, your STR stat is subtracted by the enemies DEF stat then your ATK stat is added to it, resulting in ATK power. Basically:
Weapon STR Base STR – Enemy's DEF Modifiers ATK = Attack Power
This does NOT apply to magic.
- Magic power is increased by your MP gauge. The larger your MP gauge is, the more powerful your magic attacks will be, in addition to being able to cast them more often.
- Equipping 4 Accessories that reduce _ damage by 20% does NOT make you immune to that attack. Rather, 1 = 20%, 2 = 36%, 3 = 48%, 4 = 52%.
Weapons
Every weapon is relatively unique; though some are just outright better then others. Your partners weapons are pretty straight forward, with each one being overall better then the last, but Sora's Keyblades are more diverse and force you to choose between certain stats.
=========
Keychains
=========
No, Sora does not carry around multiple Keyblades with him. Rather, the Keyblade takes on a form befitting the Keychain attached to it
*glares at Naruto and Justaway Keychains in the corner*
Kingdom Key |
Stats:
- ATK 3
Description:
The key chain attached draws out the Keyblade's true form and power.
Obtained:
Start
Breakdown:
You'll be using the Kingdom Key for what seems like forever. It's overall the most useless blade, as it is among the shortest and IS the weakest.
Jungle King |
Stats:
- ATK 5
- STR 2
Description:
Has a long reach, but seldom deals critical blows.
Obtained:
Lock Deep Jungle keyhole.
Breakdown:
I use this blade for the majority of the game. I really don't care about critical blows, as there's really no measurable way to tell when one actually occurs. It's otherwise good stats and third-longest reach of all the Keychains makes this a valuable weapon.
Three Wishes |
Stats:
- ATK 6
- STR 3
Description:
A powerful weapon that is difficult to deflect.
Obtained:
Lock Agrabah keyhole
Breakdown:
Difficult to deflect means that if you have the counterattack ability equipped, then the counterattack is almost always going to connect. Kind of useless as most enemies don't block your attacks and the ones that do wont normally do so twice in a row anyway. It's stats otherwise are not a big enough upgrade to give up my long reaching Jungle King.
Crabclaw |
Stats:
- ATK 6
- STR 3
- MP 1
Description:
Raises max MP by 1, and enhances magic and summon power. Also deals good physical damage.
Obtained:
Lock Atlantica keyhole
Breakdown:
Not a bad weapon, it's reach is average and it has good power. If you have been using Three Wishes, this is a solid upgrade from it.
Pumpkinhead |
Stats:
- ATK 7
- STR 4
Description:
Has a long reach and the ability to deal a string of critical blows.
Obtained:
Lock Halloween Town keyhole
Breakdown:
A solid upgrade from Jungle King. It's reach is only a hair less then it, and you have the ability to deal critical hits again if you feel lucky. Plus it looks cool :)
Fairy Harp |
Stats:
- ATK 8
- STR 5
- MP 1
Description:
Raises max MP by 1, and enhances magic and summon power. Sometimes deals powerful critical blows.
Obtained:
Lock Neverland keyhole
Breakdown:
Just... don't. really, don't even think about it. It's stats are not enough of an upgrade to make up for being the shortest Keyblade.
Wishing Star |
Stats:
- ATK 5
- STR 2
Description:
Has a short reach, but always finishes up a combo attack with a powerful critical blow.
Obtained:
After saving Geppetto, visit him in his house in First District Traverse Town.
Breakdown:
The only proper way to use this Keyblade is to unequipped all Combo Plus abilities. This will allow you to repeatedly critical an enemy. I still don't use this blade. Too weak and too short.
Spellbinder |
Stats:
- ATK 4
- STR 1
- MP 2
Description:
Raises max MP by 2, and significantly enhances magic and summon power.
Obtained:
Talk to Merlin after acquiring all level 1 magic spells
Breakdown:
Only equip if you really like casting magic. In real combat this is pretty useless given it's low stats.
Metal Chocobo |
Stats:
- ATK 10
- STR 7
- MP -1
Description:
Possess incredible power and reach, but reduces max MP by 1. Rarely deals critical blows.
Obtained:
Defeat Cloud in the Hercules Cup tournament (seed 4)
Breakdown:
Get this weapon as soon as possible! It has the second longest reach and the third highest ATK and STR. It is well worth losing criticals and 1 MP over.
Olympia |
Stats:
- ATK 9
- STR 6
Description:
A powerful weapon that is difficult to deflect. Capable of inflicting mighty critical blows.
Obtained:
Win the Phil, Pegasus, and Hercules cups (with Donald and Goofy)
Breakdown:
Difficult to deflect means that if you have the counterattack ability equipped, then the counterattack is almost always going to connect. Kind of useless as most enemies don't block your attacks and the ones that do wont normally do so twice in a row anyway. Technically nothing wrong with this weapon. It is overall powerful and has a reach equal to that of the Kingdom Key. I just don't like it as much as my recently-obtained Metal Chocobo.
Lionheart |
Stats:
- ATK 10
- STR 7
- MP 1
Description:
Raises max MP by 1, and enhances magic and summon power. Also deals great physical damage.
Obtained:
Defeat Leon and Cloud in the Hades Cup (seed 20)
Breakdown:
A good upgrade to the Metal Chocobo if you like casting magic (MP 2), but I just cant give up that range.
Lady Luck |
Stats:
- ATK 8
- STR 5
- MP 2
Description:
Raises max MP by 2, and significantly enhances magic and summon power. Also inflicts good physical damage.
Obtained:
White Trinity #2 (Wonderland)
Breakdown:
By the point in the game where you actually get around to tracking down this blade, you're likely to have Oathkeeper, Oblivion, or even the Ultima Weapon, all of which are solid upgrades to this.
Divine Rose |
Stats:
- ATK 10
- STR 7
Description:
A powerful weapon that is difficult to deflect. Capable of dealing a string of critical blows.
Obtained:
Talk to Belle in Hollow Bastion Library after freeing the Princesses.
Breakdown:
Difficult to deflect means that if you have the counterattack ability equipped, then the counterattack is almost always going to connect. Kind of useless as most enemies don't block your attacks and the ones that do wont normally do so twice in a row anyway. Its short reach and relative ugliness make it worthless.
Oathkeeper |
Stats:
- ATK 9
- STR 6
- MP 1
Description:
Raises max MP by 1, and enhances magic and summon power. Capable of dealing a string of critical blows.
Obtained:
Talk to Kairi in the Secret Waterway in Traverse Town after defeating the Behemoth in Hollow Bastion.
Breakdown:
This is actually a really good weapon... In Kingdom Hearts 2. Here, it's really not that great. It is a very good well-rounded weapon, however. Strong, but not strong enough to take away from MP. Longer then the Kingdom Key, but not as long as others.
Oblivion |
Stats:
- ATK 11
- STR 8
- MP -1
Description:
Possess colossal power, but reduces max MP by 1.
Obtained:
A chest in Hollow Bastions Grand Hall, opposite the doorway to the world's heart.
Breakdown:
A very good weapon and a solid upgrade to Metal Chocobo unless you really want that insane reach. I'll use this for a short time while I finish gathering supplies for the Ultima Weapon.
Ultima Weapon |
Stats:
- ATK 12
- STR 9
- MP 2
Description:
The Ultimate Keyblade. Raises max MP by 2, and possess maximum power and attributes.
Obtained:
Synthesize all items in the Moogles' Item Workshop in Traverse Town.
Breakdown:
The best of the best. The only reason not to equip this is: A) you're
insane or B) you're out of your mind.
=========
Staffs
=========
Donald's weapon of choice. He specializes in Magic, so look for weapons that increase that attribute (“balancing” a stupid NPC will get you nowhere).
Mage's Staff |
Stats:
- ATK 1
Description:
A staff that heightens magic power.
Obtained:
Start
Morning Star |
Stats:
- ATK 2
- STR 1
Description:
A staff that heightens magic power. Can also be used for physical attacks.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 150 Munny
Shooting Star |
Stats:
- ATK 4
- STR 3
Description:
A staff that heightens magic power. Also fairly good for physical attacks.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 750 Munny
Magus Staff |
Stats:
- ATK 3
- STR 2
- MP 1
Description:
A mystical staff brimming with power. Raises max MP by 1.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 1000 Munny
Wisdom Staff |
Stats:
- ATK 5
- STR 4
- MP 1
Description:
A mystical staff brimming with power. Raises max MP by 1. also fairly good for physical attacks.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 4000 Munny
Warhammer |
Stats:
- ATK 4
- STR 3
- MP -1
Description:
A hammer made for combat. Reduces map MP by 1
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 250 Munny
Silver Mallet |
Stats:
- ATK 7
- STR 6
- MP -1
Description:
A powerful hammer made for combat. Reduces max MP by 1.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 1000 Munny
Grand Mallet |
Stats:
- ATK 9
- STR 8
- MP -1
Description:
A tremendously powerful hammer made for combat. Reduces max MP by 1.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 4000 Munny
Lord Fortune |
Stats:
- ATK 6
- STR 5
- MP 1
Description:
A staff strong in both physical and magical power. Raises map MP by 1.
Obtained:
Have the Fairy Godmother free all the summon gems, then speak with her again. (you know, if she was really so concerned about this creatures, wouldn't you think she'd give you this FIRST to help find them?)
Violetta |
Stats:
- ATK 9
- STR 8
- MP -1
Description:
A rod that sometimes inflicts massive damage. Reduces max MP by 1.
Obtained:
White Trinity #4 (Olympus Coliseum)
Wizard's Relic |
Stats:
- ATK 5
- STR 4
- MP 2
Description:
An enormously powerful staff that sometimes left behind by Wizards. Raises max MP by 2.
Obtained:
Dropped by Wizards when defeated (0.2% chance)
Dream Rod |
Stats:
- ATK 8
- STR 7
- MP 2
Description:
A mysterious rod holding unknown power. Raises max MP by 2.
Obtained:
Get all spells to level 3, then talk to Merlin (this includes getting all Dalmatians and defeating the Phantom... overall not worth it).
Save the Queen |
Stats:
- ATK 9
- STR 8
- MP 2
Description:
A staff of immense magical and physical power. Raises max MP by 2.
Obtained:
Complete the Hades Cup alone (just Sora).
=========
Shields
=========
Goofy's weapon. I know, shield =//= weapon, but this is Disney and Goofy we're talking about. Remember what I said about making Donald “balanced”? Well forget all of that. It only applies when the character in question is actually useful unbalanced. Goofy's specialty is defense of himself with a single shield. Wont do you much good. You're best to choose shields that increase his attack.
Knight's Shield |
Stats:
- ATK 1
Description:
A standard-issue knight's shield
Obtained:
Start
Mythril Shield |
Stats:
- ATK 4
- STR 3

Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 750 munny

A well-balanced and effective shield for both attack and defense.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 2800 munny
Smasher |
Stats:
- ATK 3
- STR 2
Description:
A shield made for attack rather then defense. Small and easy to handle.
Obtained:
Purchase in Traverse Town Item Shop for 250 munny
Gigas Fist |
Stats:

Accessories
Accessories |
Accessories are the second form of equipment. You can equip multiple accessories at a time, provided someone else isn't already using it AND you have an open accessory slot.
Accessories are used more to augment your defense then attack. There are some that do both however.
Also remember that if you equip a party member that is native to a certain world, then leave that world, they keep that accessory till you come back and un-equip it.
The Accessory Shop located in the center of Traverse Town first district sells accessories, but they're all pretty worthless. All dropped accessories by enemies is rare, but you'll fight so many enemies that you'll think it common.

If I accidentally sold 3 of the magic arts from the white mushrooms, can you get them back?
By the way, hope you noticed this. Sora doesn't carry around the keyblade! It clearly dissolves away when Sora is done using it and comes back when he needs it. Also Metal Chocobo is the worst weapon in the game, so you must like sucking if you have Metal Chocobo or Oblivion equipped at all times instead of great keyblades like Olympia (which, by the time you get it, is the best keyblade in the game) And FYI, just because it's reach is great, doesn't mean that it is automaticlly the god of keyblades!
P.S. all of these words are to the creator of this horrible article.
i have the white fang on sora but now i want to change it but....every time i try to change it they keep telling me that removing this item lowers ap count. remove ability first
dafuk does this mean ?
>implying reach matters that much
I love how he said that the fairy harp is useless when I shattered Ansem-Riku with it while the metal choboco barely got me past one bar of his health
I laughed when you called the best keyblade in the game "useless"
Divine Rose deals the most damage until you reach max-damage with levels. Depending on items and power-ups, it usually happens at around level 70. So until level 70, Divine Rose is more powerful than Ultima-Weapon. And the only thing Ultima has on DR after level 70 is reach. (they do the same damage end game)
tl;dr - divine rose is the best keyblade
thanks
To change weapons and keychains, you go to the pause menu, open the submenu Equipment, choose a character, then choose the very top icon. You will get all the keychains/shields/staffs depending on who you choose.
Thanks for all the help
How do I equip different keychains, and different weapons for goofy and donald?
