One of the most common loot and merchant sales items in the game are books and documents.

We do not have to tell you that more often than not a document you find on a body or even in a loot chest can lead to a profitable and worthwhile quest - that is why you always take them, and you always read them.

That said though, it is very easy to end up with saddlebags and packs full of documents and books - so just which ones do you need to hang on ti and which can you get rid of? A LOT of players wonder this - so we decided to help you out and tell you!

Containers, chests, and bookshelves are not the only place you will find and encounter documents and books. Some will be laying on tables, others on the ground. So always keep an eye out for them!

Q1: When can we dispose of paper and book objects?

First which ones can you think about getting rid of and which must you NOT?

The simple answer is this: when you are done with them - which means you have completed whatever quest or mission that they relate to, as a general rule you can then dispose of them when the item is in the Usable Items Tab.

Items in the Quest Items Tab on the other hand you must be more careful in dealing with largely because they may still be required. So the general rule for the items in the Quest Item Tab is if you are not sure, then assume that it is still needed and do NOT dispose of it.

NEVER under ANY circumstances should you EVER dispose of an item BEFORE you have read it. The reason for this is simple - these objects (some of them) represent information containers that, once opened and read, will alter your game either by adding information to the Glossary Section, the Bestiary Section, or the Characters Section, OR they will add a Quest, Treasure, or Scavenger Hunt to your Journal - but ONLY if you actually open them and read them!

Possessing the object is not enough - you must OPEN it to gain any benefits that it will offer you.

Q2: What Effects can these Objects have on My Game?

In addition to providing you with information that you did not previously have, the various documents - and that includes Books - can also have the following effects on your game:

  • Character Records: When the document or book references one of the known characters in the game, any contents that you find in them may edit and update the record.
  • Bestiary Records: Any document or book that provides information - especially information that you did not previously know - about an Animal or a Monster that is found in the game world WILL be added to the records in your Bestiary. So always read them... They can even create NEW entries for Animals or Monsters you did not previously encounter - Vampires are a good example of that.

Examples of the Objects in this Category

Examples of the objects that apply to this Reference Section include (but are certainly not limited to) the following examples:

  • Books

  • Contracts

  • Documents

  • Letters

  • Maps

  • Notes / Notices

Concluding Notes

I am a sentimental old fool, so even though the letter that basically started this whole adventure - from Yennefer - was not needed past the very first scene - I kept it in my bag the whole game. Heh.

What you need to know about this stuff is pretty simple - you should read every one you get - as some will flag quests or advance a quest you are already doing.

The game will not allow you to sell a document or book that you need to read to start or advance a quest, but once you HAVE read it, and if it is not needed for the quest, any more, it WILL allow you to either sell it or break it down to make craft components out of it...

That pretty much sums up what you need to know about this category of item - but one more thing? If you make it a point to read each of these you will find that the game gets much more immersive, much quicker. Just saying...

Verdict:
Very Helpful
OK
Not Useful
