Players rank up by collecting Gold. Gold is awarded for killing enemies, dealing damage, healing allies, dispensing ammo or health packs, completing objectives, and so on. Collected Gold can be used to purchase new abilities, as well as upgrades for available weapons.

At the start of the match, players can enable purchased upgrades after selecting their class and weapon. Only one upgrade under each category can be active at a time, however, so make initial purchases with that limitation in mind.

There is a weapon upgrade category (specific for each weapon), a general upgrade category (applies to all classes), and a class-specific Veil Power category. Players can also pay to start off each spawn with an extra Satchel, Health Pack, or Ammo Pack. Look for a description of each upgrade on the right side of the Purchase Upgrades menu while an upgraded is selected.
