Special Attacks
Egg Lay (Neutral Special)
Yoshi grabs opponents using its long, elastic tongue and turns them to an egg. While trapped inside, they can be attacked. The higher the opponent's damage, the longer he/she will stay inside the egg.
Yoshi will turn into a giant egg which you can roll to the left or right. Be careful when using this move since once you fall offstage, you won't have enough time to jump back.
Yoshi throws an explosive egg to an opponent. The angle of the throw can be changed by tilting the circle pad immediately after inputting the command. The throw's default angle is a curve. Tilting the pad backward will make Yoshi throw the egg straight above him. Tilting the pad forward will make Yoshi throw the egg directly in front of him.
Yoshi jumps diagonally in the air, rolls a bit then slams to the ground straight down. The impact area is a bit large and can damage opponents lightly even if they're not directly under Yoshi.
Air Attacks
A straight airborne kick.
A mid-air headbutt.
Yoshi swings his tail up and down.
Yoshi flips upside down and attack upward using his tail.
Yoshi jogs in mid-air while slowing coming down.
Final Smash
Yoshi gains a pair of wings that will enable him to fly freely. Pressing the attack button will make him shot fast and large fireballs.
Recovery
Yoshi doesn't have recovery moves per se, compared to the usual Up Special and Side Special moves that allows other characters to recover vertically or horizontally respectively. When playing as Yoshi, you have to be careful not to accidentally enter the wrong command out of habit with the other characters. To compensate with this weakness, Yoshi has something up in his sleeve; his double-jump. Unlike other characters, Yoshi's double-jump is higher. His weight doesn't make him fall to the ground that fast either, allowing you to cover more distance and control where you'll land.
As discussed in the Recovery section, Yoshi lacks the usual vertical recovery (Up Special) or horizontal recovery (Side Special) of most characters. Instead, you'll get better air control with Yoshi's high double-jump and slow fall. Another difference is that Yoshi's Shield command allows him to hide inside an egg, instead of the usual energy barrier by most characters. While shielding, Yoshi can jump up and use his Down Attack move that can deal considerable multi-hit damage. While in the air, Yoshi's Forward Attack can deal solid damage as well. Yoshi's grab still utilizes his tongue and captures the enemy inside. He can deal damage to the enemies trapped inside his mouth by pressing the Hold button. The opponent suffers extra damage once spat out. If Yoshi manages to capture high-damaged opponents, they'll stay trapped inside his mouth longer.
Another interesting attack from Yoshi is his Egg Lay move. Yoshi grabs opponents using its long, elastic tongue and turns them to an egg. While trapped inside, they can be attacked. The higher the opponent's damage, the longer he/she will stay inside the egg. Egg Lay can be very potent especially against enemies who are steaming from high damage. If they turn to an egg, Yoshi will have more than enough time to fully charge a Smash attack and score a KO. If you happen to capture an enemy using this move while you're facing away from the edge of the stage, the enemy won't have enough time to recover even after they break from the egg quickly.
Egg Roll is a good move to charge or escape opponents. The tradeoff is that you have no chance to recover if you happen to fall off the stage. You can also use this move in mid-air but you won't be able to damage the opponent until Yoshi rolls on the ground. Finally, Yoshi Bomb is a good way to break free from melee range and deal damage to anybody nearby the impact area.
