This NES accessory was released in 1985, a groundbreaking system that controlled the robot via a game on the screen. In Smash Bros., R.O.B. has two projectile weapons and can use his rocket base to fly through the air. If you let his Robo Beam charge over time, it'll make for a powerful blast.

Special Attacks

Robo Beam (Neutral Special)
Robo Beam (Neutral Special)

ROB releases a laser beam from its eyes. You can slightly tilt its trajectory and it can even bounce on the floor. You cannot spam this move since it has a cooldown period. This is indicated by the strobe on top of ROB's head. If it's blinking fast and the strobe light is large, that means you can fire another charged up laser again which deals higher damage and has larger size.

Arm Rotor (Side Special)
Arm Rotor (Side Special)

ROB outstretches both of its arms and spins them like a rotor. Keep pressing the special button to extend the spin and deal more damage. This move also reflects back projectiles while active.

Robo Burner (Up Special)
Robo Burner (Up Special)

ROB blasts off using its thrusters. You can cut the thrusters and hover for a few seconds then press Up again to activate the thrusters. This move has one of the highest jump height as long as you kept boosting up without interruptions until ROB runs out of fuel. ROB's fuel is recharged while it's on the ground.

Gyro (Down Special)
Gyro (Down Special)

ROB fires a top to the opponent. If you charge it, the farther the top reaches and the longer it spins on the ground. This can also be picked up and thrown like a normal item. ROB can't use the same move again while a top is still present in the Battlefield.

Air Attacks

Side Air (Front)

Side Air (Back)

Both of ROB's arms spins upward.

Down Air
Down Air

ROB will blast its thursters downward.

Final Smash

Super Diffusion Beam
Super Diffusion Beam

ROB transforms into a giant blaster that fires a massive beam. This branches off to four smaller beams at a short distance. Any opponent who gets hit by the branching beams will be sucked towards the main beam. Near the end of the final Smash, ROB releases one last shot that deals extra damage.

Recovery

ROB's main recovery move is the Robo Burner. This move has one of the highest jump height as long as you kept boosting up without interruptions until ROB runs out of fuel. ROB's fuel is recharged while it's on the ground. You can cut the thrusters and hover for a few seconds then press Up again to activate the thrusters. You'll be in free fall after using this move but you can still control the direction where you'll land. If you need an extra push, you can use ROB's Arm Rotor. This doesn't leave you in free fall which allows you to follow up with another jump or Robo Burner if you haven't used them yet. You can also use ROB's Side Air (Back) but you have to be facing the stage to take advantage of the move's blast so that you'll get pushed towards the opposite direction.

Gameplay

ROB doesn't have fast combos so he'll have to rely on timing to make use of his tools better. Most of his powerful moves have recharge times, like his Robo Beam and Gyro. Robo Burner is a great recovery move but it requires fuel that ROB needs to recharge by staying on the ground. Arm Rotor is also a great multi-hit move with good reach but it lacks launching power. The advantage of this move however, is that it can also reflect projectiles. ROB's Side Smash has good knockback and considerable damage with decent range. Its aerial attacks are quite effective as well. A well-timed Down Air move has a meteor effect and a bit higher damage due to the blast for ROB's thrusters. Its Side Air (Back) move requires proper orientation and timing to deal damage and blast opponents away.
