If you read the third halo book it will say that sgt. Johnson was picked up by a nearby pelican and escaped just in time. He later met with the master chief.

Read the third book of Halo and it will say he was picked up by a pelican before the explosion.

If you mean the black sergent he escapes in a pelican I read it in the book he meets up with Cheif.

It's in the Third Halo book as the person above said.
The way he survived is that he was exposed to some chemicals and for the flood to take control of someone they have to get a connection with the humans nerual implants (something like that) and with the chemicals that srgt. Johnson had been exposed the flood could not get a direct conection.
He also escaped Halo because of the pelican there were 4 people on board the pelican. Srgt. A.J. Johnson, Lutenite(not sure how you spell it) Polaski, Haverson, and Locklear a ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Tropper or Hell Jumpers) Srgt A.J. Jognson is the only one who lives out of the four but I will not say ther deaths.
The book is Halo:First Strike it's the third halo book but If I were you I would read all the halo books because you will understand a lot more than the games will ever explain the first and third Halo books are the best (in my opinion).

Youre right, if you complete halo 1 on legendary you see him groping an elite just before halo explodes, best not worry about it all games have gliches
