HOW TO GET.
If you are talking about xbox live for the 360 then just go over to any game stop or anywhere where they sell games and buy an xbox live card. They sell them buy months so it all depends on how many months you want to have an active account or you can do it of the system itself. I think it's like $7 for one month and about $50 for all 12 months. But theres also others in between

If you are talking about the old xbox system then I think the only way to but time for that would be to connect your system and buy it off it directly.

WHAT YOU NEED.
All you really need is the live account. There are accessories you can buy ( headset, mini keyboard, ect.. ) you can play on line with out them but if you want to have a better game experience than get a headset so you can communicate with the others and work together. The price all depends on what type of headset you are looking for.
