While playing all the gaming modes found in Injustice 2, players will earn Mother Boxes along the way by accomplishing certain tasks. These so-called Loot Boxes unlock random character skins, shaders and gear, coming in a variety of rarities (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond). Mother Boxes are locked in at the given level you earn them, so it doesn't make any sense not opening as soon as you receive them.
Bronze, Silver and Gold Mother Boxes can also be purchased for a certain number of credits, but Platinum and Diamond Mother Boxes can only be obtained through gameplay. Bronze Boxes hold 2-3 items of gear, holding a very small likelihood of having of any of them being the coveted Epic Gear, and they can also be purchased for 1,000 Credits. Silver Boxes can be purchased for 5,000 Credits, giving the player 2-4 items of gear (still relatively small chances of one being Epic Gear). Gold Boxes have the hefty price tag of 25,000 Credits, but it nets the player a certain 3-4 items of gear (but still small odds of obtaining Epic Gear).
Platinum and Diamond Mother Boxes, on the other hand, each give a player a guaranteed Epic Gear in each box due to their rarity. The only difference is that Platinum Boxes yield 4-6 items of gear, while Diamond Boxes always give out six items. Again, neither of these can be purchased for credits, having to be obtain the old fashion way of simply playing the game.
