Halloween 2014

A word about this Holiday Event... Considering that we recently came off of THE major event for 2014 you can be easily forgiven if your reaction to what amounts to another month-long event in the form of this Halloween Event as being, well, overkill, but no, it is not.

What you need to understand was that, when the Family Guy: Quest for Stuff game was conceived, MacFarland only gave the wizards behind it one simple piece of advice: Go Big or Go Home!

Well that sort of advice has the effect that we have seen in the game - so while this one is not a major event it is still pretty major. The fact that you are likely in the midst of completing the unlock and story for District 9 will not help, but there you have it...

First Welcome to the Halloween 2014 Event! Now let's take a look at the official notice:

"It's Halloween in Quahog! The pumpkins are being carved, the candy bowls are being filled, and all the slutty costumes are selling out. But something seems as little spooky and strange... Quahog's being haunted by ghosts!

"Help Peter Griffin and his Ghostbusting buddies defeat scary ghouls! Vanquishing ghosts give you Spirit Vials: a powerful liquid used for buying event items and for Crafting.

"Peter found a giant cauldron and has begun making potions! But don't worry, he won't be burned at the stake for it because he's a guy.

"For the first time, choose which decorations, Characters and Buildings you want to craft. Potions are made from Spirit Vials and other materials dropped from ghosts.

" Resurrect some of Family Guy's favorite deceased Quahogians! We're reaching deep into the character vault for this Special Event. Hurry though, there's only a little bit of time before they're buried again forever.

"Who you gonna call? Peter Griffin!"

The Special Event includes a new Start/Loading Screen that features the boys in their costumes - and how about that?

While it is easy enough to do thanks to the tie-in of so many different popular IPs to the event (Ghostbusters, Predator, Zombies, Gremlins, and the like) it is always a good idea to bear in mind that the underlying function of this event - as with all of the events - is to entertain.

That said, before you allow the game to become work - before you start logging in on a schedule - it is really a good idea to find an entertaining way to make that happen so that you look forward to the process rather than coming to resent it. Free Advice mates...

Halloween Missions

It would not be a Special Event without special missions - and they did not disappoint us! As you prepare for these please bear in mind that this event is on a timer and you will also want to be sure you participate in and collect the resources from Ghosts in order to get all the stuff that needs getting!

A ghost portal has opened in Quahog! Gather the Quahog Ghostbusters to capture spirits and use them to brew up fantastic cauldron creations!

I Ain't Afraid of No Ghost

The opening event in the new missions tells you that it is Halloween and urges you to check it out! Bearing in mind that, you know, you would have done that anyway, say "Thank You Game Wizards!"

It's Halloween in Quahog - Check out Halloween!

Starting this Mission reveals the Special Event Status Pop-Up, which includes lots of information about the mission and ongoing event, including your Fright Point Total, Spirit Vial Count, Witch's Cauldron Info, Fright Levels, Ghostbuster Equipment Status, and your standing in the Ghostbuster Challenge.

Home Tab: A general Tab that shows you your Fright Point Total, Spirit Vial Count, and gives information about both.

Cauldron Tab: The Witch's Cauldron shows you the resource count for the different resources you have collected, as well as Prizes and Items Required for Prizes.

Fright Point Tab: Shows the Status of your Fright Levels.

Ghostbuster Equipment Tab: SHoes what you have and what you can use. Note that much of this is Premium Stuff.

Ghostbuster Challenge Tab: This shows the status of your Ghostbuster Challenge - basically whether you have obtained the various weekly goals that, if you DO complete them, will result in the award of the ECTO-1 Ghostbuster car in your game!

Completing this by tapping the "More Info" Button then gives more info - including a basic run through for the Crafting and collecting.

Tapping on the "More Info" Button completes this Mission and awards you with 25 Vials and 5 FP.

Hell Hath No Fury

This is a special Mission within the event that tasks you with digging up the grave of Diane Simmons - an ex-news person... Note that this mission has a time-limit to it!

This Mission set is the one that discovers and then Unlocks the Special Event Character of Diane Simmons so BEFORE you initiate it there are a few things you need to be aware of...

First, you really need to have Peter's Ghostbuster Outfit fully unlocked PRIOR to beginning this Mission for the simple reason that it is required to obtain some of the resources that you need for this. That is important because once you open Diane's grave it triggers a TIMER. If you fail to complete the two Crafting objectives via the Witch's Cauldron before the Timer runs down, you will fail to unlock - and obtain - Diane Simmons. That would really be a shame since she (a) has her own Missions, and (b) is worth adding to your game!

Hell Hath No Fury Pt. 1

That means you need to work on unlocking Glenn's Ghostbuster Outfit - which you do by collecting the following resources:

Once you have collected all of the esources required (See the Mission: Who You Gonna Call? Pt. 2), you will unlock the Outfit at Al Harrington's Outfits, and Glenn will then be able to deal with the Banshees, which of course will add yet another Crafting resource for use with the Witch's Cauldron - the Latcher Talons.

This is a rather disturbing turn in that Peter is getting very creative about seeking out investors for his new biz... As in raising funding from the dead... Really...

In terms of resources this is, if not The Most Expensive Halloween Craft than certainly one of them... Because to brew the waking of Mr. Weed from beyond the shroud of death in the Witch's Cauldron, Peter needs to spend the following resources:

Clearly this is not one of the missions or quests that will have a rapid turn-around even if you have been diligent about obtaining every resource-spawning object that you can possibly have... Which begs the question, just how loaded IS M. Weed??

In terms of the TV show it has actually been more than just a little while since Mr. Weed was a part of the story-arc, so I thought it might be helpful to revisit his back story a little...

His proper name is Mr. Jonathan Weed, and when he was on the warm side of the Pale he happened to be the |owner and Managing Director for the Happy-Go-Lucky Toy Factory - which at that time was both where Peter worked, and where he played. To put a fine point upon the matter, Mr. Weed was Peter's boss.

Mr. Weed might be gay - that was certainly hinted at rather heavily - but we don't really care about that: what you do in the privacy of your bedroom, kitchen, office, or RV is really none of our business! The fact that he was a committed Red Sox fan (both Boston AND Pawtucket) makes him alright in our books!

Mr. Weed ended up dying at the Griffin's dinner table having been invited to dine with them so that Peter could pitch for a promotion at work... So perhaps it is rather fitting that he resurrect the man in order to ask him to invest in the Ghostbusting Franchise after all?

Serendipity: Crafted Objects

As you have probably figured out the crafted items and objects in the Witch's Cauldron play into many of the missions and quests that are part of this Holiday Event. That said, there is also good reason to make some of them in their own right.

Many of the crafted objects are classified as decorations - and adding the haunted decorations to your town is one of the best ways to increase its over-all haunted level. You want to focus on adding to that because it is the main mechanism for the sub-Quest to upgrade the gate - Hell Gate? Portal? It is a gate of many gifts clearly...

Creating Crafted Objects

You will notice that in the Witch's Cauldron Crafting Menu, after you craft a given object the menu selection in the crafting catalog at the Cauldron obtains a tick-mark for that item.

That is an excellent way to not only keep track of each of the objects that you have made with an eye towards making all of them (consider it an unofficial collection if you like), it also helps you planning towards the larger objects since it keeps you aware of what resources you have - and therefore what you need to focus on obtaining.

While most of the crafted objects are interesting, the animated ones offer you a chance to combine them with other features and Buildings in your town to create some interesting displays. Just saying...

Wandering Resources

Try to remember that the event has its own groups of wandering resources in the form of Ghosts, Banshees, and Dangerous Dogs, and see to it that, when the key Characters are not otherwise engaged in Tasks and Mission Work, they are addressing the collection of these!

The Wandering Resources for this event include the following:

1. Ghosts: These are the first wandering resource NPC created and released by the Portal to Hell. The Portal has a timer and it releases the various entities based on that.

2. Terror Dogs: The second NPC entity that is created by the Portal from Hell, the Terror Dogs can only be removed by having Peter do his Task: Zap Terror Dog (which also happens to be a good source for the Bones Jars you need for Crafting at the Witch's Cauldron!). It is always a good idea to have Peter dealing with and Zapping them when he is not needed for other tasks or missions...

3. Banshees: These are the third wandering resource NPC created by the Portal from Hell - or is that Portal TO Hell? Either way, they can be zapped and collected in two ways - and are the best source for Banshee Tear Jars as well. The two methods for removing them are:

-- Ghostbuster Glenn Quagmire: Zap Banshee Task (3h 15 Vials, 3 FP and a chance to get Banshee Tear Jars).

-- Predator:* Kill a Banshee Task (3h 15 Vials, 3 FP and a chance for Banshee Tears Jars).

Considering the wide availability of the Banshees and the frequency of the timer for the Hell Portal - as well as their application in so many Crafts Recipes, this may be justification for spending the Clams on the Predator PC... Obviously that is your call but, if you have the Clams available, you could make far worse choices. Just saying.

4. Dawgs: These are the wandering Pit Bulls that were set loose by Brian and Stewie when they raided the Dog Pound to help rescue their mate Vinny.

Collecting Dawgs can only be accomplished by completing the process of unlocking Mayor West (as he is the primary solution to their collection). That being the case you have an additional reason for focusing your efforts on unlocking the Mayor as soon as you can!

* Note: This is a Premium Character so unless you spend the Clams on unlocking it and adding it to your game, this Task may not be available for you to use.

This is seriously messed up... Ti put a fine point on it, what we have here is the residents of Quahog having been visited first by demons from hell and a haunted cadre of minions, which is fine as far as those things to... But then the theme shifted to an homage to a very popular movie - Ghostbusters - which is also fine as far as that sort of thing goes.

But then the Predator arrives - OK... Then the Alien - well that makes a certain sort of sense, after all Predaot and Alien are like Peanut butter and jelly - you really cannot have one without the other because why? Because it just would not be right! Up to this point it even made a sort of twisted sense.

But now we have Rambo... What's next>Walker Texas Ranger?

Event Conclusions

The Halloween Event for QfS is the first for this annual holiday, in this new game. We don't know about you but we think that the wizards behind the game did a pretty good job of laying this one out, with just enough to do and just enough to add to make it an exceptional event.

We will have to wait and see if this was a one-off or it establishes the tradition for this event. So hey, see ya next year on that question, right?
