Mental Health is also a thing in Palworld

Several pals will be working on your bases full time and their "free" labor comes at the cost of their SAN or Sanity meter as well. Pals with low SAN meters tend to get various illnesses like Weakened state or even depression. In this article, we will discuss how to manage your Pal's SAN meters effectively.

What is a SAN value?

You can conveniently check your Pal's SAN meter by interacting with your Palbox. If you hover or select a Pal, you can see the current SAN value under its HP and Satiety (hunger) meters. As your Pals do various chores, this SAN meter goes down and when Pals eat or rest, it goes up. We will discuss this mechanic more in detail below.

Low SAN value effects

If your Pals have low SAN value, they'll be susceptible to various illnesses - both physical and mental. Pals will start getting upset and refuse to work which can devolve even further into depression. You'll also notice that some Pals will get the "Weakened" status and some can be prone to frequent injuries. This is a telling sign that your Pals are getting overworked while being undernourished and stressed out. These changes in SAN can be further exacerbated by Pals with negative Passive skills. If your Pals get Sick, you'll need to use specific types of Medicines to cure their illnesses and get them back to normal condition.

Replenishing the SAN value

Thankfully, there are several methods of replenishing your Pals' SAN meter. Having a combination of these facilities and applying these practices will significantly improve the overall SAN condition of all your Pals working on your bases.

Return them to the Palbox

This is probably the easiest and quickest method of stopping a Pal's SAN decline and allow it to recover passively. If you see a Pal that's getting overworked or not in the right condition to function, simply replace them with another Pal with similar work suitabilities.

Beds

There are three types of beds you can build in your base: the simple Straw Pal Bed, the better Fluffy Pal Bed, and Large Pal Bed. Large Pals can still use normal-sized straw or fluffy beds but you still need to craft Large Pal Beds for your larger Pals to have them enjoy quality sleep.

You need to ensure that all your Pals in the base get a bed of their own - even for the nocturnal Pals that work overnight. Not having enough beds can contribute to a Pal's stress buildup and the game will notify you if this is the case.

Hot Spring and Quality Hot Spring

Pals need some R&R. Once you have at least one of these facilities built, Pals will take a dip in the warm water to relax and replenish a good amount of SAN. You can also pick up a Pal and throw them directly to the spring so they'll use it immediately.

Accessible Feed Boxes

Pals need to eat regularly. Berries are the cheapest and bountiful source of food for all Pals. If for some reason Pals are glitched or clipped in the environment or any reason that prevents them from reaching the feed box, they'll eventually starve. To resolve this, you can just simply return the trapped Pal back to the Palbox then summon it again to reset its position.

It's also a good idea to put your Feed Boxes near production zones where there's a lot of Pals working most of the time. Having at least two Feed Boxes will help in efficiently feeding your Pals. Thankfully, feed boxes are also considered by Pals as storage so if you have a Feed Box near a plantations and ranches for example, your Pals will put food items like berries, wheat, lettuce, honey, egg, and milk to your Feed boxes. This will technically make them self-sufficient though you still want to manage some of them manually especially if you want to use the other cooking ingredients for more valuable recipes like the Cake (used for Breeding)

Cooked Food

Pals can survive with berries alone but take note that raw red berries don't restore any SAN at all. You can at least bake these berries using a simple campfire to turn them into Baked Berries that provide more nutrition and at least 1 SAN recovery. Once you have access to Wheat, you can then start crafting Bread (using Wheat only) or Jam-Filled Bun (Wheat + Berries). You'll need to deploy Pals with Kindling ability to help cook these food items automatically without your supervision.
