Passive skills determine if the Pal is ideal for base work or combat.

Capturing, managing, and even Breeding Pals is a key game mechanic and experience in Palworld. Aside from keeping a combat party that you carry around, most of the pals you capture or hatch from eggs will be assigned to do various tasks in your bases. Of course, Pals have random stats and traits that may manifest upon hatching or you'll only discover upon capturing them. In this article, we will discuss how passive skills work and provide a list of all passive skills in the game that you can use as reference.

What are Passive Skills

These are random skills that a Pal can have when you capture them or obtain them when you breed them. When Breeding, if the parent pals have good passives, there's a high chance that the offspring will have inherited some of those passives.

Lucky Pals will always have the Lucky passive skill and Legendary Pals will always have the Legend passive skill. Since pals can have up to four passives, these special Pals will still receive one up to three additional randomized passives.

Quality of Passive Skills

Passives have three different qualities and are colored coded for easier visual recognition

Gold: Great passive. Depending on the skill's effect, the Pal might be a top-tier worker at your base or perfect combat companion when exploring or fighting bosses.

White: Normal passive. Good and reliable skills that are not that exemplary but will still provide welcome beneficial effects.

Red: Detrimental passives. These can even be considered as debuffs. Pals with these passives or multiple red passives are not meant to be taken care of. However, you can still keep them for various reasons as listed below:

  • Pals with red combat-related passives can still be useful in base operations and work
  • Pals with red work-related passives can still be used (temporarily) in combat
  • You can sell these pals for gold via Black Marketeers
  • Use them as fodder to increase the stats of better Pals using the Pal Essence Condensation machine.
  • Butcher them for resources

Some Pals might have a combination of passives with different qualities. If that happens, just check and decide whether the pros outweigh the cons of having that Pal in your party or base. It goes without saying that a Pal with four gold passives is considered incredibly lucky and highly desirable. You can conveniently review all your currently owned Pals via the Palbox in your base.

Can you Change Passive Skills?

As of the moment, there seems to be no method of directly modifying a Pal's passive. However, you can achieve a similar effect through Breeding, where you select two Pals with great passives as parents then wait for the offspring to inherit these great traits. This is a somewhat lengthy process and has some wild degree of randomization but it's also a great system to create subspecies of Pals with their own Paldeck entry.
