Hobnobbing with Hobbes
(Millfields)
Escort Dan to the Hobbe Cave. Like other escort missions, you need to take him by hand. Take note that this oaf can't swim or vault so you need to follow the trail and lead him to the cave using the normal road.

Dankwater Cavern (Millfields)
Dankwater Cavern Entrance
Start by following the path; you should encounter the first gnome in this area.
A short walk from there will lead you to a larger cavern with some enemies. Dispose of them and you'll hear yet a nearby gnome's insults. Find it behind the rocks.
Follow the path and grab the chest along the way. Continue fighting off the enemies until you reach the vantage point. The quest completes afterward.

leave the cave for a few minutes then come back and the gate will be open. if you're wondering what happened to the writer you will find his journal next to a cook pot and some bones. that's how I got past the gate
I did the mission while staying out of any water. I still could not gain access to any additional area of the cave. Is there a way to open the hobb's gate in the area that I dropped off the researcher? If not then how do I access the keys and book? Thank you.
I have to agree, and I am not being rude what so ever. I did not understand what you meant by the above above comment,("don't go into the water...or you will have to start all over again") What water? There is so many puddles, and or pools in this game, particularly in this certain cave; if this is the location of the water in which you speak of.
Thank you though to all whom have commented, and gave info on this game. I am obsessed with this game and have been playing it on and off for bout a month now and this site has helped me better understand some things that I did not understand before. Thank you.
Don't go in the water when you're going to the cavern if you don't want to start all over the game for these 2 keys and book that can only be caught when you finish this quest
