If a battery popped out, then there was probably a 'surge out' as I call it, where all the energy blinks out and the supported data that was currently in use at the moment of surging out goes blank into oblivion. It's one thing to turn off the GameBoy, but quite another to pop the batteries out. I know you didn't intentionally pop the battery out, but you should tape the battery cover for short term protection against another surge out while you find a way to fix the battery cover, or whatever may have caused the battery to pop out.

Also, I have heard that if you take your game to an electronics store, like GameStop, they can try and extract the data to restore your game, but if you have no continue option, then you're doomed, my friend. If you get a sign coming up saying the save file is corrupt, THEN you stand a chance of recovering the data.

The reason that your data was erased is that during a trading session, the game is saving and when the game cuts off during saving, all the data you had is erased. Sorry. Your data is gone, so you're going to have to start a new game.

Sorry but you can't get it back. It usually happens to gold and silver but it happens to me all the time and it's always ok. But I don't know why it happened to Pokemon yellow.
