It's completely random. His Eevee evolves to whatever he wants it to. Just pray that it evolves into Vaporeon to make his battle easy.

It depends if you beat him or not when you battle him at Oak's Lab and Route 22.The rival will eventually evolve his Eevee (and thus affect which are the other members of his party) depending on the player's actions early in the game.

If the player beats the rival at both Oak's Lab and the early optional battle at Route 22, Eevee evolves into Jolteon.
If the player loses one of these two battles or passes up the Route 22 battle, Eevee evolves into Flareon.
If the player loses at Oak's Lab, and loses or passes up the Route 22 battle, Eevee evolves into Vaporeon.

Jolteon is if you win in both battles, R22 and Lab.

Flareon is if you win in the lab, but lose/skip R22's.

Vaporeon is if you lose/skip both battles.

Vaporeon is the strongest evolution( or eveelution if you may) due to acid armor, mist, hydro pump, aurora beam (chance to lower enemy atk) very balanced atk, spd, and def.

You want you rival to get flareon because you can counter it with Blastoise or, in a dramatic move, you Vaporeon. Check Prima's strategy guide on this.

Flareon learns TWO fire moves, and only one has any capabilities for real damage. You recieve Charmander north of Nugget Bridge in Celadon City, so your need for a fire type is filled. If you give him Jolt or Vapor, Elec and Wtr types are harder to come by. Well...Zapdos is very good as an Elec, but Pikachu is very weak in the E4, due to his SPC and SPD lacking.

Hey your not right.
Kenny 2x4 answered:

He basically goes for the type that will beat yours I think and since Vaporeon is a water type then you should probably evolve your Eevee into a Flareon.

cheatsupastar94 answered:

All the Pokemon games are designed to beat you. If you pick a charmander the rival will pick a squirtle, and so on and so on. So, this is how it works.

You Choose = Charmander
Eevee Evolves into = Vaporeon

You Choose = Bulbasuar
Eevee Evolves into = Flareon

You Choose = Squirtle
Eevee Evolves into = Jolteon

I think thats how it works I have not played Pokemon in years.

I am not sure though but

Waterstone-Vaporeon
Firestone-flareon
Thunderstone-jolteon

I don't know but I think you need stones to make it evolve.

NEVERSOFT answered:

More than likely just train it. It might take a while though.

Psychic_Dick answered:

Once you get your eevee from in Celadon evole it into flareon using a firestone.

Shouldn't you evovle it into jolteon because at least competitively jolteon is the strongest but if you prefer flat son I'm not stopping you
Psychic_Dick answered:

Evole the eevee you get into flareon using a firestone.

Guest answered:

If you win all the battles its Jolteon.
If you win most off the battles its Flareon.
If you don't win any battles its Vaporeon.
Hope this helps.

Guest answered:

You lose the first ever battle against Gary, at the lab. Then, you win the next one on route 22. Smile
Hope this helps.

Guest answered:

First of all, to the idiots who keep saying evolve it, Gary's Eevee, not yours. And this is how it goes:

Win the battle at the lab and the battle at the Route near the Pokémon league (in other words, the second battle) and he'll have a a Jolteon.

Win the battle at the lab but lose the second battle, your Rival will have a Flareon.

Lose both battles and your Rival has a Vaporeon.

thank you this realy helpped

I cant believe you actually want a vaporeon, you must fail at the game if you deliberately want the easy way out

I'm not sure that the technique (win/loss against gary) always works. I beat him both times when i replayed my old Yellow version, and he still ended up with a vaporeon. i remember him having a jolteon the first time i played, but i'm afraid i don't remember if i beat him both times.

harveychiefe answered:

For Noobs,

First of all in Pokemon YELLOW you get pikachu as starter Pokemon and gary gets evee. You have to choose between, bulbasaur, squirtle, and charmander in red and blue versions and so as Gary.

Second, the topic is about how to choose Gary's eveelution. Not your evee(which you can get at Celadon city)

Third, the best thing to do is to evovle Gary's evee into a Flareon, by winning in the lab and losing or skipping on route 22.

Fourth, the idea of evolving Gary's evee into flareon is to complete your pokedex. In Pokemon Yellow you cannot catch any evee, and so as evees evolutions.

Fifth, in order to complete the pokedex get gary's evee to eveolve into flareon, next is to evolve your own evee into vapereon (using water stone) lastly you will see jolteon on your last fight with Gary. Then all eveelutions are complete in your pokedex.

-note sure in the last part. Haven't got there yet but have downloaded an advance list of Garys Pokemon
Which is that he has a Jolteon. -need confirmation please comment.

lol man, no, once he starts using flareon he will stick with it...
The best way to get all 3 eeveelutions is to beat the Pokemon Stadium Elite 4 a few times to get a few Stadium eevees to download to your Yellow Cart with the help of Oak. lmao
Guest answered:

All of you are missing the underlining logic behind your rival's evolution.
Here is how it works:
Your rival adapts his eeveelution based on how he perceives pikachu.
If you beat him twice, he will see that pikachu (an electric type) is really strong so he wants his eevee to be strong as well so he makes it a Jolteon in response.
If he beats you twice, he will think electric types are weak so he doesn't have to worry about electric types in general so he makes his eevee a Vaporeon.
If the middle case, where there are a split in the battle wins, he won't have any particular opinion of electric types and just have eevee become Flareon.
This is a theory that fits the bill for the scenario.

Guest answered:

Lose at the begining and lose at route 22 the second time you battle gray
