When compared to other Sport Video Games, Football Manager is an entirely different breed and has a completely original premise. Unlike other games apart of this same genre, Players don't have the ability to do any of the playing on the field. Instead, the entire focus of the game is managing a certain ball club, imploring Tactics and scheming based upon your roster and personal preferences, in order to try to win as many League Championships and International Competitions.

If anything, Football Manager is a lot like a Dynasty or Fantasy Mode for other sport-themed video games. In these certain modes apart of other sport games, Players have the ability to build their rosters, develop players, and create game-to-game and season-long coaching plans in hopes of winning the grand championship at the end of every year. This is exactly what Football Manager is all about, with a few exceptions of course. In Football Manager 2017, players still cannot enter the games being played outside of watching how their players do and how their game plan is unfolding. They still can't do any of the playing, as FM 2017 is only a simulation game and a player is only the manager of the given team.

A player, however, can still do all the rest of the duties found in these other games. Being the manager, a player can sign and sell a transfer in order to better help their club. They can also develop transfers along their careers, as they incorporate these Players into the Tactics they would like to have for their club, the same that they feel will result in success. Players can slowly watch their teams develop every league year, adjusting things game-to-game as they seem fit in order to win more games.

The goal of Football Manager 2017, as with the rest of these sport-genre video games in their given Dynasty Modes, is to win as many games as possible from a managerial point of view, in hopes of eventually winning as many Cup Competitions and League Championships as possible. Some Players not familiar to the Football Manager Series might not see the point in playing since the game is only simulation-based and you can't do anything outside of what a manager in real life can do, but most players that have had a taste for the series absolutely love it. As the developers of Football Manager 2017 claim: It's the closest thing to doing the job for real.
