If you haven't bought benerus manor(anvil house) you can go there to get ectoplasm, or look in caves or other explorable places

Caves and dungeons are the best places to go. They normally have ghosts and something similar. Benerus Manor in Anvil also helps has the place is infected with ghosts. It's part of a quest. Buy it and find out about it and go on from there.
