I am in the tower, have killed just about everything, been to the corpse masher, but it wouldn't work. Said it was too damaged. Keep going through doors but don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. I have to find the stone that will close the gate but I don't quite know where to go exactly. Any suggestions or hints?

The Oblivion gates, although have different maps and towers they are basically the same. In ANY oblivion gate you first need to find to correct tower. If you hear a "pulsating" noise when you enter a tower you are at the right place. Then you need to go up (any straiway or passage leading you down should be avoided). You should be looking for the "rending halls" all oblivion gates have that section (good indication you are making progress) usually you will have to go in and out the rending walls (always following the path leading up). Your goal is to reach a door called "sigilum sanctum" all oblivion gates have such a door (sometimes you will need to pick the lock open) enter it and you will notice two straiways made of "red bones" and the sigil stone is on the top level. Also some oblivion gates have a sewer or cave system you will need to use in order to reach the tower.
Just keep moving up. If you hear the pulsating noise. You're nearby, just keep looking, you'll do fine.
there should be a really tall tower with with red stuff on the side of it and then they should be two or one tower leading to the big tower then at the top u get one of the sigil stones
All answers here are kinda vague. When I'm lost in Imperial city and don't want to open the map I look up and the large tower is center. Do the same in the planes, look for the tallest tower and the the door you need will always be called Tower Portal. The most confusing planes make you venture through Nether Tunnels but they always bring you right to the tower. Then just follow the ramps up till you get to the sigilum sanctum
