There is a secret to this stage that people know and can do pretty easily. You see the 3,6,9,and 12 on the clock? If you go in the course when the hand is on either of them,the gears will go at different speeds. If it's on 3,the gears move slow. If it's on 6,the gears will move at average speed.
If it's on the 9,the gears will go twice as fast the normal speed. If it's on the 12,the gears won't move at all.

Go in when the time is noon, then the gears on the clock won't turn. Also, it could make it alittle difficult if the gears aren't lined up. I would go in at about 3, that way you don't ever get stuck.
