I'm not sure what sign you're reading. If you're climbing up the pole, you've gone in the complete wrong direction. From where you start, backflip up into the water. Run over to the right and talk to the Bob-Omb Buddy and have him open the cannon. Get into the cannon, and turn it so you can see the star. Now move the angle, and you should see part of the pole sticking beneath the platform. You can aim for the star, but it's tricky, so aim for the pole. When you fire and grab onto the pole, slide down and pick up the star.
Also...I haven't the slightest idea what a giant juicebox guy is. I never saw anything in this game that looks remotely like a juice box. Sorry, someone else will have to answer that.

By "juicebox guys", do you mean whomps (giant gray rectangles with bandages on their backs)? To kill them you need to lure them into tring to fall on you then ground pound on their backs. Or do you mean Thwomps (giant blue cubes that try to squish you). If you mean them, then you can't kill them. Sorry.
