This depends on the problem you are having. To hook up via ethernet, just run a cord from the router to the xbox and make sure both are working. Than just go to network settings in the settings section and "test xbox live connection" to make sure everything is working like it should.
To connect via Wifi, make sure your router is on and plugged into the phone outlet so it can broadcast the internet connection to your xbox. Than on your Xbox go into system settings and do the same thing as you would do for ethernet. Make sure everything is working by choosing "test xbox live connection".
