When you commit a crime, there will be several ways the local authorities can be notified. If you cause a commotion by using guns or explosives, there will be an red search area and authorities will be searching around the suspected source of the gunshot or explosion. It is recommended to leave the search area immediately. Keep an eye on the Wanted icon on the top right of the screen. If no one sees identifies you or follows you, it will enter a “cooldown” period. Once the cooldown is finished, the lawmen will give up the search which means you got away safely. Most of the time, if you made a clean crime without any commotion, you can get away without any bounty at all.
If a lawman spots you within the search area, you’ll be asked to surrender as long as your weapon is holstered. However, if you commit a grievous crime, don’t expect to be able to surrender properly as the lawmen will want you dead instead. When things get this hot already, you don’t any choice but to escape.
The red search area will stick with you as long as you have pursuers within their line of sight. Once you break off their line of sight, the search area where they last spot you will remain but will stick to you again as soon as you see you. That said, it’s almost impossible to escape the law on foot. That’s why before committing a crime, always have your horse positioned nearby and your escape route planned.
