The Collected Wisdom of Minecraft PE on Xbox One

The Minecraft PE Edition for Xbox One Details

Mojang has confirmed that Minecraft PE for Xbox One will happen - in fact it IS happening right now as you read this, because the gnomes, wizards, and goblins who work at Mojang are busy porting the game as you read this!

  • The official name for the Xbox One version of Minecraft PE will be: Minecraft: Xbox One Edition.

  • The official release date will be: Something August, 2014.

  • The official retail outlet for Minecraft: Xbox One Edition is Xbox Live Marketplace.

  • The official MSRP for Xbox One Edition is: US $19.99.

  • The official additional details for Minecraft: Xbox One Edition are as follows...

  • The Minecraft: Xbox One Edition (hereinafter known as MXBOE) includes all of the content from the Xbox 360 edition but will in addition feature a MUCH larger world (it will not be restricted to the relatively tiny world of Xbox 360 in comparison).

All of the features from the content updates from Xbox 360 WILL be included in the MXBOE and that is something of a pleasant surprise - even shocking if you think about it. You see the normal MO for Mojang when releasing a new edition of the game on a new platform is to start with a very basic version of the game - something like what we saw when the Xbox 360 version emerged from Beta, and then build on from there.

What they are saying in effect is that they are not going to do that this time - instead they are going to start with a relatively advanced version of the game - at least advanced in terms of what a Minecraft port looks like at first. After all, compared to the PC version even the Xbox 360 edition is a bit, well, basic.

  • Full-on multi-player and cooperative play on Xbox One will of course be part of the game at launch, but cross-platform play will not. Basically the worlds that will exist on Xbox One will not be at all compatible with those from the Xbox 360 Edition - and that really makes sense if you think about it.

Gamers who already own Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

If you already own a legitmate key and license for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition from Xbox Live Marketplace, or you own and have played online with the disc from the Retail Boxed Version of the game, you will be able to upgrade your Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition to Minecraft: Xbox One Edition for just US $4.99. How cool is that?

The special $4.99 upgrade price will be available for any player who already owns the Xbox 360 Edition for one calendar year following the release of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Save Files

Gamers who have been playing Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and who want to can import their saved game files from their Xbox 360 (assuming you still own it - you did keep your 360 after you bought a One, right?) will be able to import their worlds to Xbox One.

The same is NOT true about heading in the other direction, as unfortunately players will not be able to export Xbox One Edition saves back to the Xbox 360 Edition.

Skin Pack and Texture DLC from Xbox 360

The official word is that most (but not all - the exact list is still pending) of the DLC-based skins and texture packs that you have purchased via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for the Xbox 360 Edition of Minecraft PE will be available for use in the Xbox One Edition of the game, which is expected to arrive in August of 2014.

Mojang has specifically stated that, while they would like to be able to say all DLC would transfer, the reality is that some of the Items are locked into the 360 version of MPE largely due to IP licensing contracts that do not allow for the content to be transferred to a new version of the game without first working out some sort of compensation for the IP owner.

. . . More to come. . .
