In Horizon Forbidden West, players are given access to a wide variety of weapons that Aloy can use at her disposal against a wide array of human and machine enemies. In our Weapon Technique List page, we will discuss the different Weapon Techniques available in the game.
Weapon Techniques are powerful activated abilities that consume Stamina. Take note however that some skills also consume more ammo (of the same type). They are also tied to particular weapons and are automatically available for use as soon as you switch to that weapon.
Some weapon types have two or three different Weapon Techniques. However, only one weapon technique can be active per weapon (not weapon type). So for example, if you have two Hunter Bows equipped, one can have the Triple Notch technique equipped while the other can have the Knockdown Shot equipped.
Thankfully, you can switch between different Weapon Techniques. You can do this by opening the weapon wheel and using the left/right DPAD buttons to toggle between the weapon techniques.

So, what weapon technique should you get first? The simple answer is that it really depends on the weapon type that fits your playstyle and what weapon you’re using often. If you’re not sure yet, it’s worth getting at least one weapon technique for your Hunter Bow early on since that’s Aloy’s signature weapon and a great all-around bow. The Triple Notch skill is a great technique to get early on, as it increases your arrows’ damage in one shot.
Next technique to consider is the Spike Trap for your spike thrower. This turns a thrown spike into a powerful explosive trap that’s capable of tearing machine armor or blasting away a group of human enemies in a large aoe.
Next technique to consider is the Focused Shot of Sharpshot bows. This is an extremely useful technique perfect for thinning out targets or tearing machine parts for a distance. This increases your zoom and deals extra damage, while only using one arrow.
Finally, you’re free to choose whatever weapon technique to learn from hereon. This really depends on your preferred weapon choice and playstyle.
