How to Destroy Metal Flowers

Thank you for printing this page from to come back to check for updates to this guide and much more content for Horizon Forbidden West

As you explore the vast lands of Horizon Forbidden West, you’ll encounter some blocked paths or walls with a thick layer of vines and a curious metal flower in front of it. You can’t do anything about it for a good portion of the game but thankfully, these locations will be marked as a “blocked path” in your map so you can easily revisit them when you have the proper tool to explore them.

Like the other special gears in this game, you’ll get the ability to craft this gear while doing the story quest “Seeds of the Past” in which Aloy visits an ancient facility by the western coast to retrieve DEMETER. The data core where this subordinate function resides is right by the entrance. However, the vault door protecting it is blocked by such metallic flowers. As such, you’ll have to explore the facility further to get the blueprint to craft something to disable the metallic flower.

Continue along the quest until you finally face a heavy flying machine called a Dreadwing. Defeat it in battle and continue to the next test station to receive the module needed to craft this item. From thereon, you just need to continue along the mission further until you loop back to the Quen outpost where a workbench is located.

Use the workbench then craft the Vine Cutter attachment to your spear. After that, you’ll get the chance to use it on a metal flower protecting the Data Core nearby. Attack the metal flower with melee attacks to open it, then press R1 when prompted to use the Vine Cutter and make the vines disintegrate. You’ll do the same process for each metal flower you have encountered and will encounter from hereon.

Metal flowers can only be opened once so if you have discovered any prior to unlocking the Vine Cutter tool, their locations will be marked on the map. You can just backtrack and destroy them whenever you feel like it to loot the valuables protected by their sturdy vines.

That concludes our quick guide for unlocking the Vine Cutter tool in Horizon Forbidden West. For more Horizon Forbidden West content, please check out our other dedicated guide pages for the game.
