Horizon Forbidden West is a stunning, massive, open-world game. Combat is an integral part of the game and other than the skills and weapons, you also have to consider various ammo types. Knowing how to use them effectively will significantly improve your combat experience. In this short article, we will discuss the different types of Special Ammo in the game.

Aside from the normal and elemental ammo in the game, there are certain ammunition types that produce special effects. You’ll be able to craft these as soon as you obtain a weapon capable of carrying these ammo types.

Special Ammo Weapon Description
Targeting Hunter Arrows Hunter Bow For this bow, you need to have an overridden machine fighting alongside you. The enemy hit by this arrow will be designated as the overridden machine’s target. Only one target can be designated at a time.
Knockdown Precision Arrows Sharpshot Bow These arrows deal lower damage compared to other sharpshot bow arrow types but they have greater knockdown power. Once knocked down, an enemy is vulnerable to Critical Strikes and other attacks.
Piercing Ammo Boltblaster, Shredder Gauntlet This ammo type deals more damage to the parts underneath the armor plating while dealing low damage to the armor itself.
Strikethrough Precision Arrow Sharpshot Bow True to its name, this special ammo can pierce through an enemy and damage other enemies behind it.
Shieldwire Tripcaster When deployed, a protective energy barrier will be generated. The barrier can protect against ranged attacks but is not capable of hindering physical movement. The barrier will also explode after absorbing a set amount of damage from enemy attacks or your own.
Staggerbeams Tripcaster A special energy beam is generated that staggers upon contact and damages enemies over time. They’ll continue to damage enemies while they’re active but will deactivate shortly after getting tripped.
Elemental Ropes Ropecaster Certain ropecasters can launch shock and plasma ropes that deal elemental damage while creating an area of residual damage around the anchor point. These ropes can still tie down machines but at a slower rate compared to ordinary ropes. Tied down machines will break free quickly when they take damage.
Canister Harpoons Ropecaster Certain ropecasters can attach elemental canisters to an enemy or environment. The canister will detonate if hit by an arrow of the same element type. Canister Harpoons will detach from their target after a short time.
Explosive Canister Harpoons Ropecaster Similar to ordinary canister harpoons, you can attach these canisters to an enemy or environment. However, you can use any type of ammo to detonate it.
